Go to
Start > Run
Type in MSconfig
From there, go through the tabs and find "startup" or something like that. Then just uncheck the program you don't want to startup.
The other way is to find the program in the Services area under 'administrative tools' in the Control Panel and manually select what you want, but that can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.

It's not good to immediately stop a program while running.
But for programs that seem not responding, you can end it by pressing the three keys:
Hold down press the CTRL key, continued with ALT and DEL keys and release.
You will be prompted with a window and select the program you want to stop and select END TASK and press enter.
But if you wish to stop and shut down it, I think the best way is to do a LONG STEADY PRESS on the power button of the CPU until it shuts down.

Go to Start > Run > type: msconfig > then go to the startup tab and it will tell you exactly what is loading at startup and you can check whether you want it to load or not. You can also look at your startup folder on Start > All programs, or you can check on the program you want and see if there are different start up options on the application it self

programs /run and type msconfig
Go to the startup tab and uncheck anything you do not want to start when boot occurs.
Be careful what you uncheck here, it could have serious ramifications.
When you reboot, you will get a system has changed box, so check the donot remind me again box and it will not come back.

Try: Start-----all programs----Startup----find the program that you don't want to startup with (there a list) and delete it from that list.
