Have you ever known a police officer to write himself/herself a traffic ticket when their traffic violation was pointed out to them by a civilian? Under what circumstances should they?

I forgot to add that I realize that, for the most part, police are exempt from strictly obeying traffic laws when executing their duties.

I'm about to regret that I even posted this question. With that said, let me explain a specific incident I witnessed that prompted my question in the first place.

I was walking into a coffee shop located not more than 30 yards from an intersection. I know for a fact that traffic stopped at the intersection traveling north/south have a NO TURN ON RED LIGHT. Low and behold an officer pulled up to the light, checked the oncoming traffic and proceeded to turn right with the light clealry still red and pulled into the coffee shop's parking lot. He got in line behind me and I asked him if he realized that he had turned right on red in violation of the posted sign. He just kind of laughed it off and said he always turned right at that light and never noticed the NO TURN sign.

Police officers are exempt from most traffic laws while in the lawful execution of their duties.

We will not write ourselves tickets. The civilian could make a complaint, have it investigated, and the officer could be ticketed as a result of this.

I can't think of a single circumstance when a civilian could correctly point out that an officer had committed a traffic violation... I mean, unless the civilian was sitting in the car with the officer, like on a "ride-along" kind of a deal (our city does this program that trains citizens to kind of "patrol" their neighborhood).
Otherwise, it's all speculation and opinion...

Likewise, I've never known of a civilian who called the police to "confess" to traffic violations and then to ask for well-deserved tickets.

I don't know why so many people are afraid of cops they are still just people. If you see something that they do that makes you not proud of your community i think you should say something or complain to a higher up. Some things to remember is that we as civilians have more rights than they do as cops.

I hope you are being sarcastic because that is just plain stupid.

I have to say that if your a cop you are dead wrong. You are going to that if you make a traffic stop for speeding or running a stop light and you find out that the driver is a off duty cop you would not write a ticket. To me that is just wrong if you don't write him a ticket you should not write any one a ticket if anything they should get into more trouble for it being that they should be setting the example.

No I haven't and I have yet to see a civilian jump dead in the middle of a cops business without being arrested for assult or some other petty charge. Being a Cop isn't easy, they have the toughest job in the country. They also have the power of life and death over us and that is a heavy burden to carry. If I were you, I'd keep it moving and not start any trouble.

There are good employees and bad employees in every profession. Police officers put their lives on the line every day. Their reasoning for doing so is certainly individual as in any profession. In my opinion, there are officers that think they are above the law. Guess what? You are not! You are paid for your services with our tax dollars and should lead by example. It is not okay.

Some idiot wrote me a "parking ticket" for parking on a sidewalk. A woman was being beaten by her husband and I pulled up on the sidewalk because there were no available parking spaces. I then ran into the apartment (with several other officers) and dealt with this assault in progress. When I came out some woman was putting a piece of paper on my windshield. I asked her what it was and she told me it was a ticket for parking on a sidewalk and that she had once gotten one for doing the same thing. She handed it to me and told me I should go pay the city $5 for what I had done. I laughed at her, wadded it up, handed it back to her, and told her not to liter.

On a nice note the abusive husband was arrested and locked up for assaulting his wife.

Usually when we break the traffic laws you should not get jealous. Because we are usually on our way to deal with something you probably don't want to fool with yourself.

no ,but i live in a very small town and the police officer who directs the traffic to and from school makes an illegal u-turn everyday to park his cruiser on the oposite side of the road and he did this one day right in front of me ,i almost hit him and he let me have it... he is a real jerk if ever i saw one!!! he should write himself a ticket and shove it!!!

he u-turns in front of a bank everyday and can very easily pull into the bank entrance to turn around making it safe for everyone else

sorry if this sounds harsh but isn't it cops job to make it safe for everyone??? i had 4 kids in the vehicle with me and if anything happened to them because of his ignorant u-turn ..he would've paid
