Elaine you are trying to give information & are being attacked for it! I don't see you as being judgemental or critical! I don't understand why people are being so defensive and close minded about the information you offered!
I appreciate your friendly way of letting others know about this movie & then they can make their own informed choice!

they are great books, though my favorite is the second as the whole plot gets clear only there. As most children don't really get the religious themes in the Narnia books and enjoy them as fantasy, the same will be true for this series.
But I never go to a movie based on a book if I liked the book. All the ones I ever did the movie was so much worse than the book. So I'd recommend, skip the movies read the books.

The first few atheist responses to this post are nonsensical given what she's written. She's expressed a positive selection for her kids and you've taken it as a personal attack and acted like her having standards for her kids is just insane and ignorant. I'm baffled.
As for me, I will read the books before I show the movies to the kiddies, so that I can engage the story and decide whether it is appropriate. I suspect that the stories are fun and can easily be flipped. Have your kids describe the god portrayed in the His Dark Materials series and then let them know you don't believe in and wouldn't want a relationship with that god either. Also, the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter would make for an excellent contrast.

I read all three books as my daughter was reading them. They were anti-religion. I didn't feel anything that was anti-god. Or, I should say, I didn't finish the trilogy with an anti-god feeling. Keep in mind it is fantasy but it did give a very realistic view of how corrupt any organization can get and how one branch isn't always in step with the others. These books make you think. They allow for questioning. All good things in my opinion.
Will I see the movie. I rather not because of how very disappointed I've been of late with books turned movies. However, my daughters want to see it and I love Sam Elliot and think he'll be a great Lee Scoresby! (I think that's how it's spelled).

Even as an atheist, the supposed atheist overtones of the series completely passed over me, or to say it in a stronger sense I never got any theism related message from the books at all.
It is a slightly dark series, not sure if I'd recommend it for young children.

I love those books, and I'm a Christian.
Do they have anti-religious themes? Yes. But they take place in a fantasy world. Polar bears talk, witches fly on brooms, and people's souls are embodied outside their bodies as animals. It's not real.
I think if anything, something can be learned from the criticism of the church in these books.
If not, it's a great story, very fun and quite moving. Now I feel like rereading the books, thanks!

It's a really good book and looks like it'll be a really good movie.
I'll go see it twice to make up for your lost ticket. : D
And yeah, I can think of about 200 famous people off the top of my head (musicians, authors, actors, etc.) who are athiests. You probably should never watch a movie or listen to any music again if you feel that strongly about it.

The operating system you asked this "question" on was most likely designed by or distributed by a company led by an atheist. If you feel so strongly against atheism, I suggest you put your computer up for sale immediately.
