Well,
Actually, I am a female Christian, and I do wear a veil. It isn't black and it doesn't cover my face, but I wear it because it is in the Bible. Some people like to say it was only for the Corinthians (see 1Cor. 11) but I personally feel that it's for me today.
And in a way, Daniel, what you said has a little truth.
I do get a kind of respect from men that a lot of women don't.
I'm not trying to keep from being tempted, but I do wear dresses that don't show off my form, so that I won't be a temptation.
After all, Jesus said looking with lust was adultery.
I don't want to be the cause of mental adultery.

It's the same reason that muslimahs cover up, for modesty. Most Christians don't currently dress like that because our society also considers jeans and a t shirt or a sweater, or whatever also modest. Even nuns here in the US will often be seen with their head covered, but wearing pants and a sweater or shirt. The idea is always to keep decent and not being exposing yourself inappropriately, it's not so much important which form the clothes take.

The difference between female Christians and nuns is that nuns are married to God and female Christians are married to men.

If nuns and muslim women wear habits or hijabs, why don't Muslim men and Christian monks wear head coverings, as monks used to do?

First of all, not all nuns wear black. Some wear grey, some wear brown, some wear blue, some wear white. We have cloistered sisters where I live who wear pink but you'd never see them because they are, well, cloistered. Mother Teresa's order, the Sisters of Chairty, wear white saris with a blue boarder.

The color of the order is usually determined by the founder, and usually has some symbolic reference. Nuns may wear black as a sign that they have died to themselves and live for Christ alone. They may wear brown homespun as a sign of humility. They may wear blue as a symbol of their willingness to follow Mary's example of total obedience.

Generally, the habit of a nun hides the female form for the same sorts of reasons: humility, obedience, dying to self and living for Christ.

Nuns to NOT believe that the female form is in and of itself evil or that female bodies are too tempting for men, which is what the Muslim tradition is, is it not?

As salaamu 'alaikym, my friend.

Insha'Allah, the tradtional dress of women who are Roman Catholic religious (i.e., nuns and sisters) comes from the clothing worn by women of that era (primarily the early and middle first millenium of the common era).

These garments were usually made out of wool, which was the least expensive material at that time as cotton had to be imported and linen was costly.

They were dyed black as that was the cheapest color to dye at the time, as well as being a color not associated with royalty. It was also a color associated with mourning (as in mourning the death of Jesus Christ) and repentance.

These religious were "under vows", that is they had pledge themselves to live in chasity (i.e., celibacy), poverty (owning no personal possessions nor striving to attain the same) and obediance to the superior of their congregation (such as Mother Superior or Abbess, as in a female version of an Abbott).

The general "populus vulgaris" ( or common Christian, whether male or female) is not under any such vows.

Monastic orders developed in Egypt, primarily, by such persons as "St. Anthony", who became hermits so as to devote themselves entirely to mediation on Christ. Persons flocked to such individuals seeking guidance. They eventually formed communities of hermits which lived in convents and/or monasteries so as to "not be of the world whle still being in it".

Insha'Allah, such is not the teaching of Islam, as any eduacated Muslim well knows.

Ma'a salaam.

i think it was because they were trying to take focus off of their physical bodies so that they wouldnt be tempted to get involved with men. it also hides them from men so they dont look "loose" like some of the other women out there...so the men dont get any "ideas"

lol

I think the world (especially our western culture) could use a little more modesty!

Well difference is:

Christian women, like to dress half naked to church.

Christians in general like to pick and choose what they believe in. They believe and do what they like.
