because usually at each track, there are 43 pit stalls. If you add more then they would have to make more pit stalls and the garage would have to be larger.

Most of the answers make it sound like because there are only 43 pit stalls that there are only 43 cars in a race.... ever think it was because of the rule first that most tracks only have 43 pit stalls?

Which came first... the chicken or the egg???

I can tell you the honest truth, I read a book about it

They tested a bunch of random numbers to go around a track 50 was to jammed up and 40 wasn't hard enough for the drivers and then they ended up with 43, Also.. They made it 43 for Nascar King Richard Petty :)

Years and years ago there use to be an unlimited amount of starting positions sometimes 55 or 60. Then in the interest of safety they lowered it down to the fastest 42!!! Then when they modified that for the points system and the Chase format and so forth they added 1 spot for Past Champion Provisionals and it has stayed that way since!!!!

They actually chose the # to be 42 several years ago. The 43rd spot is reserved for a past champion (which was added because Richard Petty missed a race, not because of the Chase format). If a past champion doesn;t need the spot, they give it to the next fastest driver. But why they chose this exact #, I'm not really sure.

They thought 44 cars would jam things up,TOO MUCH with the restrictor plate racing, and 42 car's wouldn't cause enough accidents on the smaller tracks !!! lol !!! It's true, ask John Darby... Director of competion !!!
