thanks much for all ur answers...whether u like it or not i am adding all of you to my prayers....i fear most for you that insult God so viciously... i pray it is through ignorance rather than deliberate malice towards believers.

God Loves YOU!...Refusing to believe is rejecting his love.

Fear, anger and unresolved issues. If you get into a real discussion with an atheist they usually start citing examples of people who did them wrong and claimed to be Christians.

Read the answers below this one. See what I mean?

Because for most people in our times, "oh god!" is not a prayer but an exclaimation. It has nothing to do with the existance or not of god. Simply words that our society has held on to as an exclamation of excitement.

Same reason I have heard a celebate person say "oh f**k!" They are not making a request, they are simply using an expression that is ingrained in our society as an expression of an excited state.

Actually, you religious have controlled culture, and thus language, for most of human existence.

Therefore, there are very few satisfying expletives to shout when one is in trouble that don't involve your "god." Even "damn" is actually a theological term.

Although some religions with the "name in vain" thing would say calling out "god" is blasphemous. That helps me feel good about it - when I call out I'm not only shouting something to release tension, I also get to be disrespectful of the myths.

And that there are "No atheists in a foxhole" isn't a very good argument against atheism, but it's a GREAT argument against situations that require a foxhole.

Why is it theists, even the most radical, r so staunch in their belief that God does exist?....?
and at the first sign of serious trouble their first cry for help (Oh God!!) is to the Very 'Person' who must, by their their own belief be the one responsible for causing it?

I agree with the first answer. I never curse on God, as I know he does not exist. Still, oh God is such a big part of most languages, that most atheists who do use it are simply unaware of what they are saying. Personally I worry more about Christians who use the word God when shouting abuse.

Your premise is completely wrong. We don't do that at all.

Ask atheists what we *actually* do or think when we're in serious trouble and you will find that the reality is very different from what you assume. We think about our families, about the things we wanted to achieve in life, the loose ends we have left untied, and so on. We don't suddenly start believing in fairies, ghosts, spirits, souls, gods and goddesses, Santa Claus or any other fictitious supernatural creatures. Honest.

Not accurate.

My first cry is Oh Shat!!!!

The reason many of us are so staunch in our belief that God cannot exist has allot to do with the path that we went through to get to that conclusion.

Religious people like to talk about miraculous conversions, where they suddenly just knew that God existed.

It doesn't work that way for most Atheists. Many of us go through the opposite experience, of having to deal with our indoctrination that God has to exist, and that our meaning in life comes from his creation of us.

That is a tough thing to shake off, because it is directly attached to your ego. It is why so few Christians ever truly question their belief system.

Many Atheists are staunch in their belief, because getting there took years of study, and emotional turmoil, while shedding the bad doctrine that Religion cloked us with.

Hey you know what they say, there are no atheists in a foxhole. I am an atheist and "Oh God" is a figure of speech that I use often, it is not a cry for help from a nonexistent entity.

Caught us out there you cunning bugger! We're all the secret army of god that's been sent to overthrow the Christian hegemony and replace it with pop idol worship to obscenely chirpy tunes and lyrics that would make even the happiest, clappiest born again cry!
