Low density Lipoproteins (LDL cholesterol) is the "bad" cholesterol. And 88 it's a really bad number depending on your total cholesterol.

General guidelines are as follows HDL should be greater than 40 mg/dL. Total cholesterol (HDL + LDL) should be lower than 200 mg/dL

LDL is the bad cholestrol... it stands for Low Density Lipoprotein... it is the one that can deposit in the wall of your blood vessel and build up plaque... eventually these plaque will make the vessel's opening small, thus higher the blood pressure... its called Atherosclerosis.. if the blood pressure is too high, it can potentially lead to the bursting of the vessel... if it happens in the artiery that goes to the heart it is an heart attack...LDL you want to keep below 100, exercise and diet can lower these LDL,in sever cases statin medication (lipitor etc) can help as well.

the good one is HDL... high density lipoprotein...it is the cleaner of blood vessel... your liver makes them and send them out into your circulartory system and HDL can bind with the LDL/plaques and bring them back to the liver to be process into something else... like fat, or HDL etc...you want HDL to be above 60... high level of HDL wont hurt you... there is no need to worry about bringing it down. Exercise increase liver's production of HDL.

the total Chlosterol count limit used to be 200, now they changed it to 150...

Atkins made my cholesterol shoot up like crazy...think about it: meat, meat, meat! How about eating lots of dark greens (without the heavy dressings) and walking a mile or more at a moderate pace daily for a couple of weeks. See how it works out. Cheerios is a good idea as well for breakfast.

Actually LDL (low density lipids) is the bad cholestorol. High density lipids (HDL) is the good cholestorol. Total count above 200 is bad.

I used Atkins diet and it significantly reduced my total cholestorol and brought my ratio of HDL to LDL up. It also had benefit of lowering my triglycerides.

diet and exercize can often help, and some people (including my parents) swear by fish oil supplements. I don't know the dosage, but a little research should get you the info if you're interested.
