I've actually seen that in several rehearsals - people actually think it's 'bad luck' for the bride to go through the rehearsal. Maybe it's a Southern thing...? don't know. It seems ridiculous. 'Bad luck' only matters if you still believe in the Tooth Fairy!!
I think it's a terrible idea for the bride to sit back and watch, just because she needs to know exactly what to do. If you actively participate in the rehearsal, you'll probably feel more prepared for the actual ceremony.

I have never heard that before. The whole point of the rehearsal is to know what is expected of you at the wedding. As the bride, I would think she would want to practice so everything runs smoothly, it isn't just an hour of entertainment to pass the night.

I think the first time I heard of this was on an episode of Bridezillas. Apparently it is bad luck for the bride to rehearse her own wedding ceremony, but I don't know any bride who did not participate in their rehearsal. I think it would be kind of weird too!

Yeah, I can understand how that might be weird, but I also understand the benefit of seeing from the back and being able to see what it will look like. I dont care about the whole 'bad luck' thing, so what I would do is walk down the aisle and practice, but have someone record it from the back on a digital camera or cell phone, so that I can look at it and see if there is anything I would like to change before the rehearsal is over. If you are worried about the bad luck, then just meet your man at the alter instead of walking down the aisle. Good Luck!

Never heard of it. The whole point of a rehearsal is so you can rehearse it. Even after I stood there going through the motions, I was still nervous I would forget what to do. I can only imagine how hard it would be if I just sat back and watched!

Wow....I have never heard of that! Everyone involved in the wedding needs to practice. The maid of honor has her own duties....she can't be standing in for you and listening to what her own duties are also. No, tell your wedding director that YOU want to be the "bride" because you ARE.

Do it yourself. Wear a funny dress and carry an absurdly large bouquet of streamers and ribbon. Have the groom wear a huge bow tie and a top hat. Trust me, the rehearsal is where you can have some real fun.
WARNING!!
As a friend of mine found out, the memories of a funny statement or action can come back at an inopportune time, like in the middle of your vows. During the rehearsal, a "vow" to "always match his socks and organize them by color", was added. The next day, she started to giggle during the vows.

yes this is a common thing. Its suppose to be bad luck if the bride walks down the aisle before her actual wedding day. So the maid of honor walks down the aisle for you. And then you can meet them at the front where you can take your place and rehearse. This is what is planned for when i do my rehearsal.

Your wedding planner is smoking crack. I have attended many wedding rehearsals and the bride always stands in for herself.
