My friends who are muslims, they fast from morning to 6 o'clock in the evening and by doing that they lose about 5 kgs. But, does fasting slow your metabolism down? then how could they lose 5kgs?

When food is not eaten, the body looks for other ways to find energy, such as drawing on glucose from the liver's stored glycogen and fatty acids from stored fat and eventually moving on to vital protein tissues. Body, brain and nerve tissue depend on glucose for metabolism. Once the glucose is significantly used up, the body's metabolism changes, producing ketone bodies (acetoacetate, hydroxybutyrate, and acetone). Even where this transition to alternative forms of energy has been made, some parts of the brain still require glucose, and protein is still needed to produce it.

Your body will start breaking down your bodies protein stores and will get this from a persons muscle. So yes, somebodies weight will drop. But this will not just be Fat. It will include Muscle and fluid loss. After the fast is over, there will be a lower muscle percentage, causing a lower metabolism.

Fasting does indeed slow your metabolism down, but you still lose weight with no food intake and a slow metabolism. The problem comes when the person wants to start eating again, as the weight will all come right back, and maybe even gain a few pounds.

Yes, it does slow it down because your body wants to conserve the energy it has stored. They lose weight because their bodies are burning muscle tissue for fuel and muscle weighs more than fat.

Assalamu alaikum, fasting is known for purifying both spirit and body. As long as you eat healthy and get the daily fibers you should be ok, insh'Allah.
