..."Brights," "Free Thinkers," "Skeptics," or "Scruffy-Looking Nerf Herders"?

Granted, if I'm talking to a specific person I'll call him/her by his/her name; but if we're just talking about someone in general who doesn't believe in any gods, why wouldn't it be okay if I just call that person an "atheist"?

I have a feeling most of you are cool with that, but since these other words seem to have some support out there, I'm assuming there will be some on here who would advocate their use.

Thanks!

Catherine: I will call you Catherine, as I said in the details I call specific people by their names, but lately I've heard a few say that "atheists" isn't exactly PC so I'm trying to catch up with the times when it comes to words that describe one who doesn't believe in a supreme being(s).

Scruffy-looking Nerf Herders? That's hilarious.

If I'm asked my religion I'll say I'm an atheist. If I accept any stigma in a word like that it means I've adopted the mindset of people for whom there IS a stigma. I don't embrace the ideology of Pat Robertson on any other matter so what he feels about the term used to describe what I believe is of no interest whatever to me.

Rachel, may I say how fetching you look in that white top? And you've done your hair very nicely today.

I think too many of my fellow atheists (not necessarily on this board) buy into the negative connotation that the term "atheist" has lingering around it.

I'd rather be called that than what many believers call us behind closed doors. We have bigger battles to fight than what we are labeled.

Speaking of scruffy-looking nerf herders...good morning, Rachel, my little apple fritter!

I prefer to be called "Linz" hehe :o)

Actually, I really don't like telling people in "real life" that I'm an atheist. I just say "free thinker".

I don't mind calling myself that on R&S, because most people here understand what I mean by it. However, just telling someone randomly that I'm an atheist often seems to make them think I am rebelling against God, or something.

I'm content being called an atheist despite the negative connotation that goes along with it. I often get strange looks when I tell someone around here that I'm an atheist (I live in North Carolina if that explains it) but I figure if they are ignorant about what the term means and perceive it as negative or evil, that's their prerogative.

Atheist is the correct term.

All of those other are made-up names because someone doesn't like the dictionary... But I love "scruffy-looking nerf herders." If you use that, I'll totally answer to it!

I do believe in GOd so i'm not an atheist and i would never be happy being referred to as one.
I would rather be called a christian, believer, whatever.
