My thought is that so passages can be added or removed without being noticed. If page 86 were missing, people would debate why for 2000 years.

Because sometimes, it might be printed in different fonts, and font sizes, and on differently sized paper. So... the page numbers would change. I mean I'm not a huge fan of the Bible but c'mon.

There are different Bible translations, also Bibles of the same translation being printed in bigger font size than others. That means John 3:16 could both be on page 1130, 1137 or even 1000.

The chapters and verses help everyone to find the scripture in question no matter what translation they are using.

What scriptures do you know of that are missing?

While Bibles have page numbers, it is divided into books, chapters, and verses so two people could discuss the same thing (whether book, chapter, or verse) no matter what translation or edition of the Bible they are using.

Actually, if you really think about it, this is a fairly brilliant way to ensure universal understanding.

The individual books of the bible used to be one long thing without chapter & verse seperating them.

The reason for adding chapter & verses was for better organization & reference.

And no passages were added or taken away from the original manuscripts.....God made sure of that

Edit:
More than ready.......

The chapters and verses were added by the early translators, much in the same way the order of the books were.

They are made for clarity sake, however, not always perfect (in cases when a context or lesson somehow breaches across a chapter break)

I don't get your conclusion. If page 86 was missing that would mean that chapter 10 verses 1-40 would be missing, so why would it not be noticed.

Because God wanted people to be able to pick up a manuscript and tell the difference at a glance between the Word of God and the Koran.
Just my thoughts.

Jews edited the torah by cutting the test out and sewing in the revision on hide. christianity is no different. the division into chapters and verses is 'modern' as is the punctuation. Punctuations were not found until many years later--before chapters and verses. catholic church found chapters and verses made studies easier to memorize.

If I remember my bible training it is because many of the books where written by different writers or at less different time of their lives.
