Of course you can! A wedding cake is whatever you want it to be. As long as your satified than that's all that matters right? Some people don't even bother with the big cake, instead they go for a small cake that they can cut, and cupcakes to share with everyone else. I don't think the type of cake is what really matters, it's more the memory and the symbolism behind cutting it together (and shoving it in each others faces) hehe! These wedding questions are most often easy to answer because in most cases, anything goes! There isn't a specific way that everything needs to be done. Have fun, relax, and enjoy your day! I'm sure it will be perfect no matter what you choose! :)

You certainly can but i have another way you can get that feeling of a "Wedding" cake. If you want to have more of a wedding cake feel you can purchase round cakes from a Sam's Club or Costco. They are really reasonably priced. $8-$10 per cake. Place them on cake stands at different heights and perhaps have a cake topper on one of them. Usually you can get a 6 - 8 and 10 inch cakes for a fraction of the cost. Just have them iced in all white butter cream or whipped cream. They can just sit on stands instead of being stacked. If you need more cake than have a sheet cake in the back to serve to guests. You can have just the sheet cake but it would be prettier if you went with the round cakes and cost would be about the same. My sister n' law is a wedding planner as well as myself. She has done this for several lower budget weddings and it looks just as good as any other wedding.

Good Luck and Congratulations.

I don't see why not. I made a cake once for someone who was having a sunrise wedding, she wanted a small tiered cake so they could cut something for pictures and save the top. She knew a lot of people weren't gonna eat any because it was so early. But she also had a sheet cake done by publix, for later that evening. It turned out real nice.

While I don't for one second believe it saves money (it is twice as much work for the baker and time = money), the best wedding cake I ever ate was actually a sheet cake that was served while there was a styrofoam cake on display.

Why not? Often they are cheaper but can be made to look just as nice as a tiered wedding cakes. My mom makes wedding cakes and sometimes she makes a tier cake and two sheet cakes for people with big weddings. For my wedding I just want a sheet cake.

I worked with a wedding coordinator, and many couples decided to have a smaller cake for pictures and presentation, and then the caterer passed out pieces that were cut from sheet cakes. It is so much cheaper as well, so you can spend the money you save on something else like your honeymoon!

Sure, why not, it is your wedding. I plan to do the same thing, have a nice small one for us to cut out on the table and take home and have the sheet cake in the back with the same filling for the guests to be cut up and taken home.

Sure if you want one do it...but also realize that most Bakers can do a decorative round one for you & your Groom to cut (for the photo aspect) and a sheet cake for the guests. Also--if you like the look of layers but don't want to pay all that money--check into "fake" layers (styrofoam layers frosted). They'll make a 1- tier cake a 2-3 for appearances and serve your guests from the sheet cake ini the back. Many people do this and it saves a bundle and their guests never know. ;)

Congrats on your engagement & upcoming nuptials.

EDIT: It is much cheaper due to less detail.

i assume you're trying to cut costs by getting sheet cakes. you've got two options that are better than plain ole sheet cakes.

1) have your baker make a fake cake for display at the reception. these cakes typically have one real slice of cake so that you and the hubby can "cut" it (it will be pre-cut) and feed it to each other as is tradition.

2) have a small real cake made for the reception table.

in both of these instances, the sheet cakes would be hidden in another room. perhaps the waiters will bring out the pieces and serve guests at their table or the baker will arrange it on a table pre-cut and on plates for the guests to pick up.

You can have any kind of cake or even no cake at all, and still be just as married. If you want to have a tiny elaborately decorated cake for bride & groom and sheet cake for the other 400 guests (LOL) that's OK. The two cakes just have to be identical except for decorations. (You can't have a triple fudge for yourself and plain yellow for everyone else.)
