Ek het net my graad twaalf tweede taal eksamen gedoen, so ek hoop ek kan net 'n bietjie verstaan! Twaalf lang jare van die kak.... eish.

As a Dutchman, I can read written Afrikaans without any trouble. I think this applies to any Dutch person. Spoken Afrikaans is a different matter. When you know the context, yes. But when you don't know what they're talking about, no. But it is said that a few months of study is enough.

Do you understand Afrikaans?
In today's Dutch you would say either;Verstaat U Afrikaans? or Versta jij Afrikaans?

no i dont understand afrikaans sorry. it sounds like german cause i recognize " verstehen" / to understand.
