I am not sure that atheism excludes the existence of an afterlife, it is more concerned with the fact that god does not exist. I have heard different perspectives that an afterlife might exist on different grounds - be it matter and energy since neither can be created or destroyed. What becomes of the person in this case, who knows? Anyway, until someone can show me otherwise I will be content with my mortality.

If atheism can include terms like this then I'm not an atheist I'm something else.

How could an atheist say 'I don't believe in god - there's no proof but I believe in an afterlife.'

Its inconsistent. To believe in an after-life you'd have to have some very confused ideas about where emotion thought and consciousness came from. Neurobiology textbook, anyone?

I don't believe in anything supernatural. Period.

Sure! Why not? A person can believe anything they choose to believe. Just because they don't believe in a god or higher power, doesn't mean they believe they won't live on in eternity in some form or another. Dang, didn't you watch Cocoon?

Atheism means they believe God (or some form of God) doesn't exist. It'll be a far fetched idea and need some good evidence, but it's possible too some degree

Plenty of people who don't believe in God believe in all manner of other nonsense, including that there is life after death.

It you believe that "consciousness" can persist, free of the neurochemical substrate of the brain by strict natural processes, you don't even need to be spiritual.
