American interventionism in the Middle East. The United States helped start the Iran-Iraq war through its Arab Gulf allies Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which resulted in the deaths of nearly one million people. That was done to punish Iran for the Hostage Crises. Early on, the fist Invasion of Lebanon was with the full blessing of the United States, and the US continues to support Israeli brutalities against Palestinians. The US has also been supporting Gulf regimes that have been suppressing their own populations and serving the interests of the West rather than their own people.
The problem is that American foreign policy is based on white supremacist doctrine that Anglo Saxon super Powers are morally, materially and intellectually superior and must dominate the world with an aggressive use of force and the US must religiously support Israel.
Unless we come with a more egalitarian policy in which all nations are more or less the same in the eyes of international law and conflicts can be decided by an international court rather than by the man sitting in the White House, things are not going to change.

I think America is called "The great Satan" for a myriad of reasons.
most importantly, it seems to be a result of the arrogance of both American and Eastern culture (two very wide blankets) through which they fail to try to understand each other while failing to take into account their own perspectives.
By comparing the other culture with their own, they only see discrepancies and illnesses, so hence only ever see the bad in the other.
For eastern cultures, namely those of the middle east who refer to America as the "great Satan" this is because they view America as being a source of evil in terms of some of the current political and economic situations throughout the world.
As America per sued a semi imperialist agenda during its rise in the early and mid twentieth century, its influences and its policies have caused a ripple affect through out many societies, which may have caused dis pair, poverty and hunger.
One such example of this is that of the cold war era. by pitching countries against each other in an ideological battle, America has created an extremely negative image for itself in countries around the world.

I've not heard America called the Great Satan. I have heard it called Babylon the Great... trying to compare it to Babylon which had many different beliefs within it. The problem I see with that is when you read the thing within context, you can tell it's talking about Rome... not America.
I guess some people just really don't like America or what our Gov't is doing. Maybe they should vote? =)

Actually the Idea of Satan as a demonic creature is a Christian concept. Muslims and Jews stay with the idea of Satan as the deceiver, as the God's angel meant to tempt people away from doing what is good. So when old Saddam used to call USA the great Satan he meant the great liars. deceivers. Tellers of untruth.
I think they might have had a point.

Because America is a free country and the others countries look down on us because of the things that they see in our country. They see sexual immorality being accepted, they see killing unborn babies as legal murder. They see Americans driven by money and getting more, more, more. Obesity is a big problem. We have a problem with gluttony in America. Gluttony is over doing it. Mostly with eating. But, Americans suffer from gluttony in everything. We are an immoral people. God is not taken seriously by many anymore.

We, in America have what the rest of the world doesn't have. Freedom. The freedom here gives people the right to do what they want, say what they want, believe what they want, wear what they want, look how they want. 90 percent of the world doesn't have that freedom. muslim radicals have in this present day the least freedom of all in that they do everything as "Allah" would have it. which removes that freedom. since here in America we have freedoms such as Sex, Drugs, Rock and roll and since you have a free society you have the freedom to choose your lifestyle as "evil" as it can be. the muslim, and other societies however. they take that freedom away from their people to force them to live "righteously". Since we do not have a "righteous" society because of our way of free agency, Hence we are Satanic.
