I understand it to be saying,
anything that we have done that was genuinely to better our future will help us, and anything that we did just so others could look at us and tell us how good we are
was a waste of time.

...like the do unto others, do unto you quote.
can be karma or can be that good deeds will be rewarded ... in short be a better person.
