I've dabbled in both ice dancing and pair skating.
Ice dancing: Over the years I've come to appreciate it more. I enjoy watching the original and free dances . . . but I'm not into watching or skating the compulsory dances. I'm just not a "pattern" or tempo skater! But you gotta learn all the patterns to get through all the levels first . . . I just didn't want to pursue it. However I did like ice dancing with a partner . . . it meant more to me to ice dance with someone. But experiencing how hard it can be - especially skating with someone who's skates are right next to yours - I've come to have more respect for all the ice dancer intricacies (oh they make the footwork look so easy)!!
Pairs: I've always liked watching pairs . . .and different from ice dancing, it's more like single skating - plus the high lifts and throws and such. There are more "acrobatics" which makes it exciting for the viewer . . . but for the skater(s) that means extra commitment with on and off ice work and strength training with a partner (and sometimes dangerous close call incidents) . . . I just didn't want to pursue it. Lifts are fun off off the ice, but they're kinda scary on the ice (you really gotta trust your partner!).
So I guess I'm saying I lean more towards pairs . . . but honestly I am a solo free skater by far!!

I prefer ice dancing. I used to think it was boring, but I've come to appreciate the difficulty and complexity of dance. I love watching the intricate footwork and deep edges and changes in hold. The lifts are always amazing too. Because they can't be as high as pairs lifts, the dancers always seem to be inventing new and different lifts. Plus, dance is always very dramatic, and the costumes can range from gorgeous to scary. :)

I enjoy pairs skating better because of the lifts, throw jumps and the different spins they can perform. I think they have more elements to "play with." Dancing, while it is difficult and very technical, I get bored with it fast -- no offense to any dancers, I have a lot of dancer friends. :) I have thought about trying it, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as jumping and spinning.

I would prefer watching pairs skating over watching ice dancing, but I really enjoy ladies and men's singles figure skating for watching watching and skating ladies.

No, not really. Pair figure skating is a lot more athletic.
