I'm writing a paper for Sociology about religion and war. I can't seem to find any verses from the Bible on the subject (except really violent ones). I'm specifically looking for any that are along the lines of... though war is sometimes necessary, there are certain guidelines that must be maintained as well (i.e. no killing women, children, the elderly, civilians, etc.) Or that peace is encouraged. Something of that sort. Thanks.

elaii000 - Thanks, but I know that somewhere in the Bible there have to be guidelines on war. Half of my paper is on Christianity and the other half is on Islam - and Islam has VERY specific guidelines on what is okay during times of war (you can't kill women or children or the elderly or civilians or animals or plants), so I'm trying to be objective and find something good in the Bible as well.

Exd 15:3 The LORD [is] a man of war: the LORD [is] his name.

an ethical code has no place in war. your paper should be about how religious intolerance is the stuff wars are made of and how many battles were fought in the name of christianity where the victims were mostly women, children, and the elderly.

EDIT.

unfortunately, the first 3/4 of the bible pertaining to war is war propaganda. it is violent and unprejudicial. the second 1/3 speaks of a holy war to come and since it is supposedly a batlte against "the wicked" it is also unprejudicial.

if you want to write a paper that is worth an A, you need to focus on the social implications of religious fervor in the modern age and how wars are fueled by it.

you won't find any balance between the barbarians in the bible and the disciplined, concentrated warriors of Islam. being objective would be to notice these differences. not try to establish a commonality where there isn't one.

Warfare in the New Testament is not warfare among people but a warfare in the spiritual realm not in the natural realm. The rules of battle are all the principles for spiritual warfare stated in the Bible which to be yielded with the spirit of faith. The sword of the Spirit, the spiritual weapon for Christians, is essentially praying always in the Spirit which the Apostle Paul advocates in Ephesians 6:18 The good news is that God's kingdom, the kingdom of light, always prevail over the devil's kingdom of darkness. Christians do not fight against flesh and blood as the following Scriptures confirm:

2 Corinthians 10:3,4 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,

Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

God bless you.

Micah 4:3,4-And he will certainly render judgment among many peoples, and set matters straight respecting mighty nations far away. And they will have to beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. They will not lift up sword, nation against nation, neither will they learn war anymore. 4 And they will actually sit, each one under his vine and under his fig tree, and there will be no one making them tremble; for the very mouth of Jehovah of armies has spoken it.

(2Sa 8:10) Then Toi sent Joram his son unto king David, to salute him, and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer, and smitten him: for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. And Joram brought with him vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass.
