It's the hardest, because at least in the modern world a person cannot do literally everything for themselves. I suppose if you wanted to do the experiment of going into the woods with nothing but what you make for yourself, you might survive. But where would you get the clothes you wear? "Make them yourself?" You'd still have to buy the fabric.
Anyway, without getting carried away on that, even if one or two people could actually survive without anyone else, the entire planet is not big enough for everyone to do that.
So even the most self-reliant person you know is actually relying on hosts of others. Even if they earned the money they use themselves, when they go to the grocery store and buy their food, they are relying on those who stock those shelves and manufacture the products, etc.
We all need each other. At most, self-reliance is a matter of degree.

It is both because when we have to make decisions without validation we feel lost but such things are expected from Presidents all the way down to beggars. We all have to decide things and no matter how much we search for wise counsel in the end it is your own spirit that will choose. This is hard.
It’s easy when self-reliance is a system that you’ve honed into a nice rut that comforts you with its familiarity. Sometimes such reliance while easy is in truth quite difficult. I was made aware today that I can hardly accept anything from others, help, compliments, even money if offered in earnest charity and I didn’t “earn” it.
The hard self-reliance and the easy self-reliance aren’t in fact the same thing most of the time. Definitions fool us so easily.

Words, I'm not knowing what you mean by self, is that the mind/body/self and what is relying on, is that being responsible for self.
I will go with that.
Being responsible for our own existence, realising that thoughts are "things", knowing our birthright is to know God, moving on that basis, does seem to be the road less travelled, but I know I thank God every day I have.
Is it easy or hard.
I feel life is harder, not knowing. I see such struggle against the obvious, I see the pain of the diseased body, and the whimper of the emotions unfurled. My heart aches for most beings, that is hard. but all in all, I find living the responsible, reliant on God life, is easier than what I see for others who are chug chug chugging along the railway track.
It can be as simple as breathing in and feeling what is real, or as hard as being alone in a crowded room.
It is magical, a mystery, a wonder, and I would not have it any other way.
Bless you for the question, always good to feel where one is at.

Depends on karma.
Most people overly identify with their conditioned ego-self. So much so that they can't detach from its thought system and reactions.
Reestablishing the authentic Self often requires becoming the observer of the learned identity and mastering it - like an addictive behavior. Knowing that there is a potential higher order is a necessity.

I try not to make that mistake. I have spirit guides that I have learned to ask for assistance.
