In the comic books he starts his career as Superboy. They never let you know his exact age when he starts but it did seem he had to duck classes in high school to go save people so that would make him at the minimum, 14.
He got around some of the problems by using a robot to fill in for him at times.
Also, there as not any of the schizophrenic behavior that you see in the TV show. He had no problem switching back and forth between being Superboy and Clark. As Superboy the issue of his father's death does not come up and when you go to the Superman comics, they never mention his parents.
Originally he grew up in the 1930s but as time went along the "time warp" factor started being a problem so around the 1970s they started aging his past so today you would assume he grew up in the 1980 or 90s.
The issue of Lana was that she was his first love but he simply moved away from Smallville, met Lois and Lana was just referred to as his first girl friend. They never really let you know if she was his first girl friend as Clark or as Superboy.
The Superman saga has been redone a number of times but Smallville is the first that has tried to add some new dimension to the story. The only complaint I have about Smallville is they have stalled out. Lana is still around and Clark is still being a love sick kid over her. Lois is obviously older than Clark, which is not how the comics have it. Lastly in the Comics, once Lex lost his hair he became evil. They need to get back on track and move on. Dump Lana, let Lex go evil and have him put on his costume.

The answer to that question changes every couple of years with retcons to the story line, and or alternate universes.
It is my understanding that Canon for the Primary storyline only has him suiting up in his late 20's, and not knowing of Krypton until he's out of High School, which means that Clark never suits up as 'Superboy'.
Last time I read 'Birthright', which I believe to be the latest retcon, he graduated from HS, found a Kryptonian equivalent of a lap top and wanders the Earth for 7 years, decoding the computer and covertly honing and using his powers. He returns to the US after a political assassination of a friend in Africa.
When he returns, he decides to go public with his powers, and suit up. Pa Kent gets mad and takes a sledge hammer to the space ship. Clark explains that he's not abandoning His human side, but embracing his alien side, and that he will have 2 identities, that of Clark and the superhero(Lois still gets credit for seeing the \S/ {a Kryptonian symbol for HOPE, no longer the logo for the House of El} and naming him Superman) He then dusts off some old glasses and an acting book to disguise his Clark persona, so that he can appear as Superman in Full view, with nothing to hide, figuring that with his powers, a mask would frighten more people that it would help.
In essentially a throwaway line in BirthRight the Kents talk of Lana dropping off the Map after graduation, and not being heard from as of the events of the story arc.
In the 90's, she'd settled down with Pete Ross, and he eventually became VP to Lex's US president. and last I'd seen before the retcon, She and Pete had a Kid, named Clark, but were getting a divorce, due in part if not majority to her lingering feelings for CK

He was being Superboy and helping people around the world. His mother died and then his father was dying and while on his deathbed, his father made him promise to use his powers only for good.
Clark decided he needed to become a reporter so he would know exactly when something happened so he could be there faster to help people.
You can read exact pages from the original comics at this site.

There are so many different versions with the different earth versions and the other planet versions. You just have to read them for yourself.
