I live in Cairns and grew up here. The best time of year if you're a tourist would probably be September or early/late winter because the weather is BeAuTiFuL.. it's getting a bit hot here now but it's also a brilliant time if you can hack the humidity. This time of year, you have to swim in the stinger nets because of the jellyfish but over winter it doesn't matter. Try to go in a few rainforest streams and creeks because there's some awesome swimming holes here. All year round is pretty good but try to skip the beginning months (Jan-Late May) because that's more the Cyclone and wet season and you're more likely to get rain then. Be prepared for it to rain no matter when you're here though. It's part of living in the tropics. Looking out my window now, the temperature is a bit warm but nice and the sky is blue and cloudless and just wonderful. Gonna be a great weekend!

I live in Cairns, Northern Beach.
Cairns is famous for its close proximity to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef and the World Heritage listed rainforests which border the city.
Most tourists generally travel to Cairns during the winter months, not only for the nice weather, but because of the stinger-free waters. From November until May each year, stinger jellyfish make the waters off the coast of Cairns very dangerous. The sting of the small Irukandji jellyfish or the Box Jellyfish can extremely harmful or even deadly. If you get into the ocean during the stinger season, it is advised that you wear a protective stinger suit. Also, some beaches provide stinger nets for you to swim in such as the Northern Beaches. I go to the beach everyday and have not been stung once... although there was a croc sighting this morning... but that didn't stop some people swimming !
Plenty of other activities to do in Cairns!

Bus or hiring a motor vehicle are somewhat the only elementary approaches to get there (different than for millionaires on yachts and helicopters). Buses flow oftentimes from Cairns to Port Douglas and it could purely take approximately an hour to holiday there. there is no practice line north of Cairns.

We visited Cairns and Barrier Reef in August 2005 and the weather was gloriously sunny. Cloudless skies.
