Should a tie be worn or no tie? I've been contemplating which to go with.

my husbands notice says no shorts, sleeveless, or tank tops or sandals. all other is fine. it should tell you on your jury summons. if it is the first day you won't even know yet if you will serve jury duty. if elected you will want to dress nice but tie is optional. you will be sitting in with a judge and counselors daily.

Hey, Tim. I'm a court reporter, and I have worked in the courtroom. Nice pants, like khakis or Dockers, and a dress shirt are fine. Jeans and T-shirt are a little too casual, but you don't need to wear a tie. Some men do and some women wear dresses, but it's not necessary. Just dress like you would if you had an office job. That's a good standard to go by.

Peachykeen, you're hilarious. I have worked in courtrooms, as stated. Jurors do not wear ties, for the most part. The rules are actually no shorts, no sleeveless shirts, or flip flops. Some people do show up in jeans. I'm not saying it's appropriate, but you will not get excused because of it.

Jury duty can be a long tiring process, there really isn't any reason to be uncomfortably dressed. You can't go wrong with a nice pressed pair of khaki slacks, polo shirt tucked in,a web or leather belt, casual brown shoes with socks to match the shoes. In these garments you will be reasonably comfortable and neither under nor over dressed.
Tip: If more than one jury is being chosen, you might want to consider taking a book.

You should dress as if you're going in for an interview. For those people who think a tie isn't appropriate, try again.

EDIT: When I was summoned for jury duty, they turned a man away because he wasn't wearing a tie. I was told you are to dress as if you were going to an interview and I did as did everyone else in the courtroom.

Most judges prefer people to come to court dressed like they are going to church, so if it was me, I would suggest a tie. However, in my area, you will find that most men jurors do not wear a tie, and if you do, you will probably be in the minority. Most jurors wear nice casual. I don't think there is a go-wrong answer here. Just don't show up in shorts, or flip flops, or holey jeans. Dressing nicely will help you get in the mind set you need to be in to pay attention to the case, and make an intelligent decision.

The court will insist that you dress appropriately, meaning no jeans, T-shirts with sayings on the front of them, no shorts, tank tops. You can wear khakis or dress pants with a polo shirt, sweater, sport coat, button down shirt.

If selected, you will be sitting in one position for up to eight hours a day in an airless room, with no direct sunlight and needing to concentrate.

Get comfortable.

A collared t-shirt and canvas pants is perfect ~ neat and tidy, but not dressy.

Cheers :-)

Khakis and a polo shirt are safe. You want to be respectful in the court (NO jeans, shorts, tank tops, etc.) but you also don't want to be dressed better than the judge and the attorneys, lol.
