Yellowish discoloration in jaundice can be apparent at the same time in the skin and the white clear covering of the sclera (called the conjunctiva), and on the mucous membranes. But it may be more noticeable first on the conjunctiva due to its white color especially if the jaundice is very mild.

In case of jaundice in newborn, jaundice appears first on the the face (including the eyes),then to the chest, abdomen, and down to the extremities.
