I have been with my company for 2 yrs now as a marketing admin assistant/ graphic designer, and recently found out from a friend/co-workwer of mine (who is the same job title as me, but strictly admin, no graphics), that she is making about 10k more than me an was only hired 12 months ago.

I had previously asked my boss about 6 months ago for an increase in salary, that would fairly match my job skills and what I contribute to the company, and i got an increase. But at the time he said he gave me what he could afford and when i got the increase cheque it was an extra $25/month (talk about a slap in the face.)

I spoke with my boss recently an let him know that the salary gap was completely unfair, an that unless the company brings up my salary I will have to look elsewhere.

3 wks has gone by an things seem to be going nowhere, so I'm currently looking for another job, but if I am offered an increase should I ask for the mrkt rate for Graphic Designer salary+1 yr retro pay?

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it. I realize they most likely won't retro my pay, but just wanted to see what others opinions were on the matter.

Sometimes you just need to move on. It sounds like you work for a small company and the truth is that small companies simply can't afford to pay as much as larger ones. Plus, sometimes staying with the same company is a problem - they've got away with paying you so little for so long that they know they can continue to do it.

Basically, they're not going to match what you would be able to get in another company (if you really could get 10k more) so I suggest you just leave.

If you find another job and your current employer asks if you'll stay, you should ask for at least what the other job has offered you. Asking for a year retroactive pay would not make sense - not going to happen.
