i heard a quick quote from the bible on the opening of a cooking show. something to the tune of you can eat all the fish you want but dont eat anything with a shell. does anyone know that specific verse? it was too quick for me to catch it. i love seafood but i will definatly give it some more thought if the bible says not to eat it, why does it say not to eat that?

That is part of the original dietary laws given to Moses and the Israelites at Mt. Sinai.
Most Christians believe that these laws apply only to the Old Testament Jews and not to Gentile Christians. We are no longer under the Law, but under grace. Also in the New Testament is the vision given to the apostle Peter where he sees all the creatures (many of which he considered unclean) on a sheet, and Christ tells him not to declare anything unclean which Christ has said is clean.

Some people think these dietary laws were because of the lack of refrigeration and food preservation and these foods would not have been safe to eat, although many of the listed foods are foods that are still considered not good for meat in most modern cultures (scavengers such as buzzards, etc.)

Go to this website and you can search for things like that in the Bible and read it for yourself. You can search by keyword or topic as well as the verse location.

Leviticus 11:9These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

10And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

11They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

12Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

Acts 10:9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

10And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

11And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

12Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

13And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

14But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

15And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

16This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

I also think this passage in 2 Timothy 4 is on point to this subject:

4:1Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

4For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

5For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

Hope that helps!

Yes it says that in the Old Testament. However, it also says not to eat pork. But when Jesus died on the cross, he made all things new and the old laws no longer pertain.
Remember the 10 comandments? Well, in the New Testament there is only 1 comandment and that is to love one another. Why? Because if we love each other we wouldn't committ the first 10.
Things changed with the coming of Jesus.

FYI: Some people still abide by that, because of the way pigs are fed and live in filth and because crustations are considered the cockroaches of the sea.

I never heard of that, but I did read in the Bible that it said that, "Man has dominon upon the earth and all living creatures thereof". I would say that if you want to eat shellfish or any other creature, then you have the right to do so.

You must also understand that the Bible was written in a time where things are not as they are now. The Bible is not the direct words of God, but that of prophets. The Bible states that we should erect a tent in the desert and butcher lambs and indulge in their blood, but we do not do this.

The intent of the Bible is one of good, but the details enclosed are not for our society. If you take any passage literally, you are missing the point. The entire book is saying, "do well and you will be treated well". It has nothing to do with your diet. In times past, there was a reason not to eat certain foods, because they were dangerous as they had no refrigerators. It isn't that you "can't" eat something, but during those times it might be deadly to eat them.

So, this is my explanation of your question. One must address the times in which a passage was written. In that time, people had no idea that we would invent a microwave or a refrigerator. It was written for the time in which they lived. It was not written for the time we live in now.

Leviticus chapter 11:verses 9, 10,11,12 covers what you can and can not eat our of the waters. you will need a cross reference bible that will direct you to other supporting scriptures through out he bible that even flow into the New Testament. here are a few to help you better understand
Deuteronomy 14:9 supports Leviticus & state that it is unclean to for you.
many students of the bible state that Part of the scriptures was for the back in the day only and that this does not apply for us today because of the lack of care that was not taken in the cleaning of the food item (s) before eating and they believe that when peter had his dream/vision about being on the roof top and a large sheet open up and there was all sort of food to eat in the sheet , mean that all things are not good to eat.... what the food in the sheet meant was that the good news (spiritual food) that was for the Jews first was now open to the gentiles (us non Jews) to receive as spiritual food... because so many of the Jews of that day did an still do rejected the food of the good news of Jesus Christ... a lot of us the non Jew forget that the first Christian that carried the good new to the gentiles were Jews themselves. here is my e mail address for any additional questions evelyn52murray@yahoo.com

Yes, the bible says not to eat shellfish. It also says that women shouldn't cut their hair and gives advice about owning slaves. So I wouldn't be cutting lobster out of my diet just yet. It is widely thought that this advice was given because prior to refrigeration shellfish tended to go bad easily and make you really, really sick. Another version of this is the old saying that you shouldn't eat shellfish except in a month that has an 'r' in it. In other words, only in the winter because it goes bad in the summer.

The Old Testament had a lot of hygiene-related rules like that. But Jesus said we can eat anything, because it's not what goes in your mouth that defiles you, it's what comes out. In other words, no spitting, and don't talk nasty.

"But all in the seas or in the rivers that do not have fins and scales, all that move in the water or any living thing which is in the water, they are an abomination to you." (Leviticus 11:10)

Leviticus is controversial because people tend to pick and choose what they would like to follow from this book...do you break every piece of ceramic you touch during your period?

Hey there are a lot of lobstermen in my town. Are you saying they are evil? I'll have to ask this on the big board.
They may be planning mischief for Holloween.
All kind of stuff happens around here.
