I'm afraid that I'm not getting jobs because I have lots of unpaid debt, many collections people trying to collect. My last job had Ford Credit garnishing my wages. Any reason to worry that I won't find a company that will hire me?

Doing background checks is becoming more and more common.
Companies would rather pay the money for a good check than to have to deal with a bad hire. And companies would rather not get involved with the time and expense of being involved with garnishments and collection issues.

if it is a serious career type job- Yes all companies background check every one they consider hiring. some companies will wait for the background check to be complete before they make the final selection on qualified candidates

If it is a low entry level job i.e mcdonalds, wal-mart. it depends upon the manager who is doing the hiring and what you are being hired for. if it is a cashier type job you will be more likely to be background checked. they may consider someone with bad financial credit to be an internal theft risk. but if its dish washer at the local Applebee's they will be less likely to check.

** unrelated to the question but to below about drug testing. I worked at a Cracker barrel restaurant they only drug tested if you were involved in an accident at work that required you to go to a hospital. the real reason they do that is to prevent worker's comp claims. they know there are a lot of recreational drugs (pot) users. who will not go to the hospital for minor injuries to avoid the drug tests

I just applied for a job that required I take 3 tests and an interview, they said they would do a backround check and had me sign an ok for it as well as they asked for 3 references. All three of my friends called me today to tell me they actually called and asked questions about me...but as far as credit check they have to tell you specifically that they are going to do that and ask permission...that was not asked of me. My potential employer is looking for drugs (did a drug test too) and any criminal backround.

Not all employers do background checks. If it is for a financial institution they are likely checking your credit but generally you need to sign off on the background checks they are doing (i.e. give them written consent to do the check).

If it is a Financial Institution you can count on a back-ground check and forget about the job.
