I am visiting and my passport says I must leave by Dec. 27th. When I go back to America and apply for a Visa I think the only one I can get is a work Visa. Do you know about this? Thank you!

Firstly,a work visa does not exist in that term. But a Sponsor could help by stating that he needs your special skills,at 60 it really would not apply.Even though we have discriminating laws in the UK it is so easy to find the word no.Common sense says that older people in work are more of a liability than say younger people, regarding many factors one being the Safety at Work for which Insurance is required their are many more. You must also realise on attaing the age of 65 a male becomes elegibly for Government Pension.Unless you have a solid purpose to live in the UK a permanent Visa will not be given to you.I realise my words are not the ones you want to hear but will save you a lot of expense and hassle in pursuing it.However another type of Visa exists whereby you can stay for a period of 12 months and in some cases 10 yrs but then the criteria for that has to be satisfied.I am not sure what they are but Please consult the British Embassy website for more information. The one that springs to mind is that you wish to come here to take care of an older relative or close friend. You would need to provide proof that during this time you had sufficient funds to live off.A Reasonable amount would be say £10,000 ( $20,000) per year and that you had accomadation. Finally, all is not lost and providing you go down the road suggested it is possible. You will find our Embassy staff helpful in this regard in the US and you are required to complete the simple application form online and make an appointment to visit the Embassy this can be done within the space of around 1 month.Your dilemma has touched me and wish I could help you further, the British people have no objection to our American friends living or working here, you are Welcome best of luck to you.

I am female 50years old with good qualifications and I find it very hard to get a job, if you are over mid 40s nobody seems to want you - most of the jobs are taken by immigrants mainly from Poland as legally they can work for under the minimum wage, around £2.00+ about $4 per hour

B&Q, a chain of our DIY shops employs over 60s. Age discrimination is now illegal in the UK. So a prospective employer would not be able to refuse you work that you are fit and able to do on the basis of your age.

Mind you, I don't know how well that law works in practice!
