I have just bought a sony kdf-70xbr950 lcd tv from my cousin. I try it out on shows on cbs and abc. The picture was perfect, but when the commercials come the picture is cut on both sides. I don't know whats the matter, but most commercials it does that and some dont. Also I'm planning to get a hd-dvd player for it. You guys have any recommendation on getting a good one for it? It can receive signals 720p and 1080i but will make it to 768p. I also want to sign up with at&t for their sattelite service, but I want to make sure the picture doesn't cut in half like in them commercials. I also heard by 2009 all channels will be hd. Will my tv still be able to pick those channels up? Im perfectly satisfy with the picture quality now, not planning on upgrading to 1080p until I get out of dental school.

You can't make the creators of commercials change the format on their commercials....they change them to GET your attention...and they have, haven't they?

Your TV is FUTURE PROOF so don't worry about that part of the system....

Now AS FOR HD DVD....NO upconverting player makes a DVD HD....it must be a HD DVD disc <> Blu RAY disc for HD...
Upconverting a 480P disc just "line doubles" the video information...it doesn't INCREASE the detail....
So that guy is Totally WRONG.....

My FAVORITE is HD-DVD.... and the reason is COST....
VHS won because it was LOWER cost than Beta was...and Sony Knew it was a BETTER system than VHS...
They didn't drop their prices...and they lost.

But the fact is PS3 is the BETTER unit and since it's coupled with GAMES, it WON'T die from too high PRICES...

I wouldn't want to PAY $45 per DVD movie or $50 for a game...but I would RENT them.

Some commercials may still be in the 4:3 aspect ratio (width by height). The TV can be set to stretch a 4:3 picture to fill up the entire screen. It is a menu setting. Not everything looks good stretched out.

No one can honestly recommend a high-def DVD player because of the format wars (blue ray vs HD). You may end up with a player for which there are no media (like Beta video cassettes or 8 track tape players). But if you must, you can get good results with either format. Look at the movies available in each format before you buy.

A good up-converting DVD player can be had for under $100. Make sure you connect via hdmi or component video to get the high def video.

Indeed, broadcast will switch to the HD format soon. Since you already have a HD TV, there is nothing to worry about. Connect the Sony to an antenna and see what you can get. The 720p resolution is fine for almost anything, even though some salesmen are trying to tell you to "upgrade" to 1080i or 1080p. Enjoy.

Your best bet is to call your CATV or Sat company and get a HD-PVR. Simply record your favorite shows and skip the commercials.

In 2009 - all the antenna signals must be DIGITAL - not high def. Since you are going with Dish network - you dont have to worry. If you go with Cable - you dont have to worry.

HD-DVD player. Watch the sales in November & December.
