I haven't read the bible but I've heard Christians quote the bible to back up their opinions on them.

I am a Christian and if there was nothing in the Bible about:
1.Homosexuality - I would be less worried about my daughters orientation.
2.Abortion- my thoughts would not change. I believe each person should be able to choose. God gave us free will for a reason... I still wouldn't have one but I would not keep others from making that choice.
3. Pre-marital sex - My thoughts would not change. I shouldn't have done it because those people didn't love me and it cheapened the experience once I was married.
4. Contraceptive use - My thoughts wouldn't change....I still believe that MOST people should use contraceptives and use them properly! Too many unprepared parents out there and yes, I have a tubal.
5. Charity - Yes, I would feel the same. I give when I can and it doesn't harm my family to do so.
6. Alcohol and Drug use- My thoughts wouldn't change because I am a recovering addict. I don't deny others right to use it but it just aint for me!

Some "biblical" moral positions require a lot of interpretation. But the Bible is a big book and with enough diligence, one can find justification for just about anything.

In addition to the Bible, some Christians use something called "Natural Law", which states that everything has a proper function or "power" that should not be distorted. So, for example, the purpose of sex is procreation, therefore homosexuality violates the natural power of sex. The same reasoning applies to contraception of any kind. If sex occurs, sperm and egg must be capable of meeting, and if they do meet, the fertilized egg must be allowed to develop. (That's why the Catholic Church only allows the "rhythm method". It doesn't involve a physical barrier.)

Families would have a "power" as well, to protect children and enable them to reach adulthood. Clear familial roles and monogamous marriage would be part of that. Adultery, including premarital sex, would be hazardous for that model. Alcohol and drug use would also be covered in that these would suppress good judgment and likely distract from a wholesome family life.

That leaves charity, which is like taking care of the larger human family. A lot of this has to do with making sure everyone gets through life okay, an honorable thing that works pretty well. Unfortunately it isn't very flexible on the face of changing social conditions. Nor does it deal so well when values conflict. It is rooted in the needs of ancient culture and a time when survival was more iffy. A stable food supply, better understanding of disease, and supportive social institutions can make old precautions less necessary, yet hard to abandon.

Excellent question! Have a star...
I'm not Christian so I can't answer from that perspective, but I'm inclined to think that they wouldn't think anything like the same things without the Bible. It all seems to be gleaned from there, which is part of what makes it seem so shaky.
As for those who say it is ingrained on our hearts: how can you possibly think this when it's only people who have been raised with the bible who believe those things? If you're right then everyone would have exactly the same morality, and clearly we don't!

1. Homosexuality: This is a tricky one. Over all my veiw on homosexuality differs from the common strereotyped christian beleif, but my beleif is backed u by what the Bible says. However, if the Bible had absolutely NOTHING to say about homosexuality...I'd suppose this subject isn't important enough to discuss in the Bible therefore it must not be a sin.
2. Uhh, wait, the Bible doesn't say anything about abortion. As I recall, a thousand years ago, woman weren't ringin up the docs to get fetuses pulled out of their whore-freak bodies.
The Bible says not to murder, and abortion is killing a human, but even if the Bible didn' say not to murder I'd still believe it wrong. (actually...if the bible didn't say not to murder i wouldn't be a Christian)
3. Same. If the bible didn't say anything about pe-marital sex...I'd be like Well this Must Not Be Important Then
4. ?
5. Charity? WTC? Would I still help others if the Bible didn't say to? Oh, fer crying out loud...
6. This is stupid. What kind of God would God be if he didn't mind yu going out getting wasted?

1. This is always a negative outlook for the one asking. I embrace gays. But the truth is a completely gay society will have a hard time continuing. You should spend your time on other concerns.
2. The Bible has virtually no ordinance on abortion. Until the first heartbeat, the fetus is still mere matter.
3. There are numerous accounts of sex outside of marriage. Even Joseph of Gen 39 was tempted.
4. Abstinence is a contraceptive.
5. Charity is always good if it promotes care.
6. Moderation is advocated by physicians.

All in all, Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love your neighbor and God. Everything else is left to the individual to discern.

If the bible didn't back up these issues then God would be remiss. I really believe that everything that God said, He said for the benefit and safety of mankind not for deprivation.
Once I was driving thru a school zone and got upset about the reduced speed and the ticketing process and I was talking to the Lord about it because it annoyed me so badly and I suddenly felt impressed within me that even though these laws are restrictive, they are designed for the cause of love and safety, they are for my benefit as well as others. I had a very different view of them after that.

1 - fine
2* - situational
3 - fine
4 - fine
5 - if you want to
6** - I'm okay with it

I am an atheist.

* - I think that the killing of any human at any stage of its life is wrong. This is the opinion I would give to people if they specifically asked me for it, but I would never force my opinions on someone else. When I say situational, I mean that for me I think it is allowable in cases where the woman was raped or the woman will die if the baby is carried to term. Again as I said before, these are just my opinions and I would never force them on anyone.

** - I don't care if people drink or use drugs, in fact I occasionally drink. I choose not to do drugs but why should that stop someone else from doing them. My only rule about all of those substances is that their use should not affect the lives of anyone else, (i.e. drunk driving) otherwise, bottoms up!.

Unfortunately many modern day Bible-bangers use the Bible much like a drunk uses a lamp post, more for support than for illumination.

The mature spiritual being finds the truth for himself. Bible reading and prayer can be a part of that, but real soul searching and independant thought in needed. The mature or growing spirit doesn't believe something just because somebody told him to or because it was written in a book.

Like so many other parts of life. True Christianity or spiritual growth is a journey or learning and maturing, not just memorizing rules set down by others who desired to be bossy.

i would like to raise my hat to you...this is a very good question and i am very intrigued to read the answers
myself not being religious at all am fully open to people believing what they want...free world after all.
personally though what i think of the question...i think that we are all influenced by things in life, its how we make our own decisions. i also though would like to say that the bible is a very influencial thing in some people's lives and for sure, if that wasnt around, it wouldnt be a factor in how some people decided to make their beliefs, there would be other factors that contribute to their beliefs

this was an awesome question and i am not trying to offend anybody, but yes i do believe that if the bible wasnt around to set an influence, or really any religious text for that matter, that people may have different opinions on those topics. not to say their minds still wouldnt change

we are all beings of creation, wether that be science, god, or otherwise...which means we all have influences that make us the creations we are.
