when ever im editing clips on the movie maker it all of a sudden stops responding and freezes the whole program
so when i reload movie maker again it asks me if i want to keep editing the previous clip. so i say yes and all of the videos and clips are like really short and even when i add other videos and pictures they all become really small so i cant edit them.

what do i do or how do i stop it from doing that

You must be looking at the timeline view and it is zoomed way out. All you need to do is zoom in again. Use the magnifying glass tool or press Page Up or Page Down to control the zoom level.

movie maker doesn't like large movie files. If you were to try an import anything more then about 10 mins worth of video into it 9 times out of ten its going to crash. Basically dump it and try vurtialdub if you want to do basic combining or look for something else because like most thing microsoft makes its a piece of junk.

WMM is not junk people just don't know how to use it. It's most likely the format you are inserting into the program. Try converting to wmv cause more than likely it's an avi your trying to import.
