Do some research and with a little info from your girl buy him a bottle (or a few) of his favorite type of spirit. Something well aged, somewhat rare and shows thought.
You could also ask her for some other suggestions since she hopefully knows him well.

If you don't know him well don't go overboard. Maybe you should ask him to dinner, the mom and girlfriend too. Sit next to him and have a conversation about whatever and everything. Make sure you listen to his likes and dislikes in the conversation and then choose a gift. Often men like tools and yard things or a work bench etc. Come by when you know he will be home and say "I was wanting to thank you for the job lead, the boss is great and the challenge is right up my alley. I feel like my future there is real promising, and if you will accept this gift, I feel you deserve it. He probably will say no this is not necessary and dinner was enough. Tell him, you know not everyday do I get to do this, please just put up there with those things and don't think about it. Is (girlfriend) home? Maybe she can come out and help to change the conversation. Needless to say get to know him everytime you see him and he you.

My first suggestion as a gift is to never show anything but the UTMOST respect for her, him, his family and property. Following that, liquors can be very nice and they are quite costly when they are.
Example:
Talisker- the inimitable Island malt whisky
Johnny Walker Blue Label
Johnny Walker Green Label
Ketel One is a good vodka in many flavours
Step one has got to be to find out what type of liquor he likes so much. Then do a little research on the net, comparison shop locally, present it to him with a bow on it, a firm hand-shake and good eye-contact as you say "I want to thank you, sir." Then you can take SuzyQ to lovers' lane or wherever while dad sits home and gets schnockered!

Samuel Adams brews the worlds strongest beer. It is made in very limited quantities, and is very expensive. If he likes to drink, it is something unusual that he likely has not tried before. I would be very touched if my son's girlfriend presented me with such a gift. My daughter's boyfriend, well since she's only twelve, I'd get be pissed if he were old enough to buy beer.

I'm not sure a gift is necessary or appropriate. Not everything in life has to be a transaction, with one thing given for another.
I would send him a very sincere, well-written note, expressing your gratitude for his assistance on your behalf, and your intention to live up to the vote of confidence he gave you by helping you get this job. Good luck!

A good bottle of scotch and a prostitute makes for a great gift. You can get each for about $200 a pop. The only thing with scotch is, that some people are particular about it. Try CraigsList for the prostitute.
