Here's a dog that started Agility when he was 11:

If you want to check out the sport, go to a trial. Find one in your area by searching here:

When you go, you'll meet all kinds of competitors - teachers, students, World Team members, all kinds of people with all kinds of experience. The club that's hosting the show will most likely have information about classes.

There's no definitive age, some start as young puppies, some much older. The only thing I'd recommend is that before you start agility training with your dog, that you take him/her to your veterinarian for a check up. Tell them what you're planning and make sure your dog is fit and has no problems that might get in the way. Then as long as you get the all-clear you're good to go!

you can find out more about dog agility, including how to find dog agility clubs and classes near your home, at the url below. Agility is tons of fun, enjoy yourselves!

I asked this about 3-4 weeks ago, and I found a great agility place and I just had my first class last night. It would help if you stated where you lived, so we can actually give you sites to good agility places. Go to google, type in "Dog Agility Training in -where ever you live-" You can also try the yellow pages. I'd be glad to help if you could tell me your location.

There really is no age limit, just make sure the dog is in good health condition and is able to run and work hard.

If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me at animalessence@yahoo.com.

Some people start training around puppy to 3 but I've seen dogs do agility when they are like 9 so no dog is to old (unless they seem to be hurting, then you might want to retire him/her)

Great advice here.

One more thing to consider. Even if he turns out to be too old to become competitive, there is a huge advantage. Older dogs tend to develop pain in the joints. Working out on an agility course on a regular basis can help your dog live a happier longer life. Your dog will love it (if he isnt grey haired yet).
It will be good for you also (if you arent grey haired yet) :-)

To get started in agility, find a good trainer!! I can not stress this enough. There are so many amazing dogs out there who've been ruined by inept trainers. Indeed, it would help if we knew where you lived, but a good starting point is Clean Run's listing:

No age is too old, BUT you must make sure your dog is healthy and fit. The only way to know this for sure is to take x-rays of your dog's hips, elbows, and spine. Most people just take hip x-rays, but older dogs require more precautions.

Most dogs start under age 7. No age is to old for all of it.
