A pagan ritual somewhat accepted by the Catholic Church and, therefor by break off denominations that did not categorically deny the ritual.
In the acceptance of All Hallows Eve the Church began its purge of witches. The fear of Halloween was began by the Church to 'crucify' paganism and to exalt their Christian religion.
Many years of this passed and then Christian 'Trials of Ordeal' became the fad. If you were accused a Witch you were given a trial much like this.
You were bound in a sack with heavy stones and thrown into the river. If you survived ! you were burned at the stake or stoned. If you died you were innocent.
The horrors of Halloween are Christian.
In the 70's (Murder City) Detroit gangs made Haloween BAD
as Hell Night when the gangs took over the city and rampaged. It continued and today we are still very carefull about what our children bring home in their bags. In some US cities the night for going out is through businesses on the 26 of October. Other places kids go through brightly lit malls.
The horror of Haloween isn't Paganism as much as modern violent society.

No, it originally was a celebration of the changing of the seasons and to do something good, which was the warding off of bad or evil spirits. Due to Christian and commercial industry it has become so twisted that it hardly resembles the original event. Today it is nothing more than a fun activity that gives children something exciting to do, which nets them some candy. How can you think that is bad? I guess some people have nothing better to do than look for something to cause drama about.

No, today it's a night to dress up & have fun. Personally, I think some take it too far but, as far as I know, that's their concern.
Originally, it was a 'Day of the Dead' for pagan religions. Then Catholics tried to change it to a celebration of saints (All Hallow's Eve which is where the name Halloween came from).
The people I know have a tame party where whoever wants to dress up can and we end the night telling ghost stories around a fire. There are scary movies available for any adults who want to stay up past the kiddies bedtime to watch them. I really think it, or any day, being 'bad' or 'good' is up to how the person interprets it in their head.

No.
Here is a little Halloween trivia - The reason you dress up is so that the spirits that come on that night can recognize you as a human! - I love tid bits like that! -
In other culture it is still recognized as the day of the dead. The go to the grave yards, bring flowers ... and remember.
I think what you see today is what happens when BIG business gets into the act.
Don't let the spooks get you!

The original holiday came from the Catholic church. Today the holiday means nothing more than dressing up and candy. Now there are a few groups that do evil things on Halloween, which are too gruesome for me to write on a public forum. But, these people simply choose Halloween as their day to do evil. If Halloween went away, they would simply choose a different day.

NO. lol It's about honoring the dead loved ones in your life. And, fun. Costumes and trick or treating are great fun. I love Halloween. It's also my dads birthday. This will be our first Halloween without him. I'll seriously be at the cemetery this Halloween telling my dad happy birthday. Anyone want to go with me?

I have good memories of Hallowe'en ... when I wasa kid and there was a big fat orange moon hanging in the sky and we got pillow-cases of candies and my brothers and sister and neighborhood gang were all together and it was a fantastic feeling of being thrilled.
sure, you could "make up" scary stories of yada-yada spirits and powers, but if you think about it, *those* things are not dependent on a calendar-event if you accept *that* page of reality
delicious memory

Halloween is, for the most part, a totally secular holiday where kids dress up and get free candy. It has little or nothing to do with actual Pagan religious practices (which are not bad things either).

Halloween is cool when it's celebrated as a pagan religious holiday and as a harvest festival. As for the trick or treaters, they're OK, but it has been commercialized much.

No, it's just another holiday borrowed from Pagans like Christmas and Easter.
I am atheist but I celebrate many holidays not for their root, but for the spirit and cheer they foster.
Halloween: Fun time for children and grownups to dress up and eat fun stuff and follow a variety of other traditions. Some may be scary, but scary things (like old houses and caves) are not inherently "evil."
