That's one hypothesis. Or it could be something NOT supernatural that makes our brains work the way they do.

I wish I could believe that we have souls. I hope we do have some piece of our consciousness that does love on in a different place.
But there is no evidence of it. We shall find out when we die, or we will be dead and finished.
I think that to which you so eloquently refer is a conscience. And we do have that, but as a part of our Earthly existence.
We do this mental gymnastics, I believe, because we are afraid of not existing after death, so we try to figure out a logical way to show that we will goon somehow. But all our efforts are really not going to change what will happen.
But we all go through it together. We do have that modicum of comfort. I was thinking about this as I walked my dog the other day. She is totally happy in the moment, and has no idea that she is mortal. Do I envy that? Not really. What we know about our own mortality is a part of the human condition.

emotions and feelings should be guided by reason in a proper acceptable way . this is not a soul or conscience but we use these names for the reasonable use of action .
the idea of a soul has no proved basis but makes a fine substitution to spurn the imagination of our youth in a responsible direction. some think better a lie for sake of truth than no truth at all . Adults with good educations should see beyond this adolescent mindset and understand the more real logic to good human relationships with compassion and ethics.

Actually your soul is actually the part that you first decribed. It is the seat of our emotions and that is where our emotions originates. Your spirit though is that part of you that is pure and connects you to God. The physical body is just the house of the soul and the spirit. This is why when we die(physically) it is that our inner man-soul and spirit- has separated from the body or has evacuated the building!
2 Corinthians 5 (King James Version)
1For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
3If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
5Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
9Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

No, you do not have a soul but as long as you are living and breathing you are a soul(Genesis2:7)7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
(1Corinthians15:45)45And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
(Acts27:37)37And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

When we live by knowledge of good and evil we are always tempted to sin and tormented by it.
That is what lead Adam and Eve to become separated from God our Father in Heaven.
But if we live by the spirit which is the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden we won't be tempted to sin or tormented by it.
If Adam and Eve had chosen the Tree of Life instead of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil all of us their
descendants would have been born spiritually alive and without sin.
The way we go about this is to give up our own understanding and allow Jesus to live for us through us because Jesus is the Tree of Life and the only one who ever lived on earth that fulfilled Gods laws.
Jesus is the only one who can do this and if we let him He will do it for us and you will be amazed at the changes you will have in your life if you turn completely from sin and give your life to Jesus who will take you out of Adam and make you His descendant instead.
Adam died and that's why all of us are born spiritually dead but Jesus is alive and paid the full penalty for our sins so when we become truly saved we cease to be related to Adam and become one with Jesus and completely forgiven of all our sins and delivered from the temptations Satan sets before us.
Satan can no longer claim us for his own and the old sinful person we were before dies with Adam as we are resurrected with Jesus and reborn again brand new in the body of Christ.
Jesus accomplished much more for us I think than any of us will ever comprehend.
We were born worms but because of Jesus we are able to become beautiful butterflies.

I do partly agree.
I believe our souls is that part of us that our concious being tries to control.
Or maybe our soul is our concious being. WHo knows.
either way....
I think our souls are those bits of you that you dont seem to like about your attitude or thought.
Those pieces who are just always there creeping in the back of your mind as subtle little thoughts.

Actually its a battle between the flesh and the spirit. The flesh loves the world and the things of the world while the spirit loves God and the things of God. Trouble is, without belief in God, the flesh always wins out.
Do you live for the spirit or for the flesh?

Nope, that's just idea threads that get rejected from the narrative of selfness as per Dennett's "Multiple Drafts" theory of consciousness.
There is no soul.

I don't think we have souls at all. The internal turmoil is simply our own brain trying to figure out if we can get away with what we want to do.
