All you really need is a High School Diploma, but higher education is preferred. A lot of the guys I worked with had two to four year degrees in Criminal Justice. I had two years of studying Respiratory Therapy and didn't even complete my degree. It had nothing to do with working in a prison, but they didn't apparently care.

A college degree shows that you are trainable and motivated. Working as a prison guard doesn't require geniuses, but there are some challenges, especially if you want to do your job right, instead of just punch in and collect a paycheck.

Most important of all, they want you to have a clean record. Of course, we all have pasts. Some of which aren't too proud. That includes me. As long as you've outgrown that past, you'll be fine, unless you try to hide it from them and they somehow find out. Then, you'll be fired immediately.

I would avoid working in any Maximum Security prison, unless you live for adrenaline rushes. I worked at a medium/maximum security prison in Danville, IL. It was a state prison. There are also local jails, county jails, and federal prisons that you can apply for or change to. It was a good paying job, but the worked sucked. It was BORING!!! I still can't imagine doing it for 25+ years before retiring. However, some other people absolutely loved it. Either way, it turned out to be a good stepping stone for me.

Good luck.

Corrections Officer is the proper term for a prison guard. Military training, or a martial art would look good on an application. As far as education, most C.O.'s have some kind of "imbalance". This isn't rocket science, but I hear the pay is fair. Best of luck.

i would check with the prison and learn about it. if you have military, police experience that would be a plus. HS diploma/GED and how to type. but as u go up the ladder, education plays a role in how much u'd be running

It looks better if you get a 2 year degree in Criminal Justice to add to your resume. Be fairly physically fit, have good credit, pass a drug test and they prefer no criminal background. If you want a SURE thing that you'll become a C.O. you may want to attend a 4 year college for Criminal Justice and have all the above.Credintials matter!!!

Typically, a HS diploma or GED is required. Other training will be provided once you're accepted.
