...A couple of friends of mine went to a Nascar race and got a "cheap" motel. We paid $30 dollars for the room ($10 a person).
...Turns out we paid $5 too much for the motel room so the manager decided to have the cashier brings us a $5 refund back. On the way back to the room he thought about it a realized that he could not split $5 between 3 people and it come out to be equal so he kept $2 and gave each of us a dollar back.
...So instead of paying $10 a piece for a room we now had paid $9 a piece for the room, which was even better. So all together we paid $27 for the room because 3 x 9 = 27.
If we paid $27 for the room and
the cashier kept $2 then
that accounts for only $29
There is still $1 unaccounter for....
What happened to the other dollar?

I thought the math section might get mad at me if I asked a Nascar question there.

Diane B hit the nail on the head vote her best answer and end this question your math is messing with my brain!!!
OK I lost sleep over this......Now here is the answer.
The room came to 25 dollars. you paid 30. The manager brought you back 3 dollars. You paid 27. The two dollars he kept is yours. It is not even because two of you paid a dollar to the guy with the money and the third paid to get you from 24 dollars(8 a piece to the hotel) to 25. There is no extra dollar.
So one guy paid 9 dollars to the hotel
2 guys paid 8 to the hotel and 1 to the manager for a total of 9
all paid nine total
he stole 2
Now if race nut 17 lost an hour of sleep where did it go?

The other dollar went for cockroach bait in that $30 room.
Seriously you all paid $27, the manager took 2 and gave the motel 25. Of the original 30, you guys have 3, the manager has 2 and the motel has 25. 25+2+3=30

For the price you paid for the ticket to the race (each) and the price of gas it costs you to get there - whether it be right down the road or not - you have the B**** to ask about $1 ????
And if maybe it didn't cost you a dime to get there, you still had food & most likely something to drink, which either way, is more than one dollar. So, my advice to you, Get Over It!
By the way, why is the cashier so worried that he couldn't split a $5 bill for you?? $5 is $5 - figure it out and get some breakfast.
That's what's wrong with this country...

U can't look at it as being divided 3 ways. You just have to look at it as $30 for the room (regardless how many people went in on it). They decided to charge you $25, but since they don;t have change they gave you $3 back. 25+3 = 28. They kept the last 2 bucks.

I have seen this riddle before and it makes me insane.
I understand the 25 dollar room.. and the guy bringing back 3 dollars.. 25+3=28 and keeping the 2.... 28+2=30
But I DON'T get 9x3=27 .... mind boggling.
It was funny reading all the answers tho. :)

this is a joke. i go to richmond twice a year and there is no such thing as a $30 motel room anywhere within 50 miles all the hotels are too intent w/ ripping off the hard-working nascar fans that is why we camp out for $15 a night but this is a real old joke

So your room was supposed to cost $25. The manager came and gave you three dollars back, that makes $28 and he kept the $2. Sounds right to me.

I call bull sh!t on this. There is not a chance in holy hell that you got a $25 dollar hotel or motel room in 2007 ANYWHERE in the USA. Much less likely to do so on a race weekend, near a track. Sounds awfully fishy to me. But I think this may be either a homework question or a riddle so I digress.

Hmm is this the NASCAR forum or a math test, god I hated these problems in school. As for where the dollar went DEI took it to buy cut-rate parts for Jr's motor this weekend.
