I'm looking to buy a touring bike and all the bikes I've found cost so much, some over 500 or more.

Maybe it's just the city I'm in or I should get a used one.

How much did you pay for your bike?

Just to get around. Not to race or get fit, I just use a bike to get around.

The bike I have now was about 150 dollars, I bought it in America I think.

I ride it like everyday, but I'm looking for a touring bike. Plus my bike is pretty small for me at this point. I've had it since I was 12 and I'm now 18.

Yeah, I'm probably going to get a used one.

well if you're looking for a touring bike get a steel one probably. go to www.surlybikes.com and look at the long haul trucker. you're not gonna pay under $500 for a touring bike that will last you unless if you buy it used.

I paid $1,000 for my Felt F85 this year and $2,100 for my Felt F55 back in 2005. I used to have a Trek 5200 that I paid $2,600 for back in 2002. In all honesty, a $500 touring bike is a pretty good price because even a decent entry-level road bike cost a little more than that. below $500 for a new touring bike and you're getting a bike that you really don't want to do any serious touring with. Remember, with a new bicycle, you get what you pay for up until about $5,000- above that is mainly the snob factor. If $500 sounds like too much, search Craigslist, the local classified section, or Ebay for a good used one. Also, if you buy new, buy from a bike shop- not from a department store. It will be worth it in the long run.

I don't think you need to know what I paid for my bike. It's completely irrelevant to your situation. Bikes run from a little under $100 at a toy store to $8000 or so. $500 is in a common price range. You didn't mention where you looked or the brand/model you were looking at so is all rather nebulous to me.

EDIT: Mr G you are sooo right - about the word and the thumbs down artist!

My favorite bike, a Gitane Tour de France with Campy, Stronglight and Mavic set me back one hundred eighty 1970 US dollars. Do the inflation thingy and bikes are cheaper today.

It all depends on what you're using it for! Commuting or serious exercise and fitness, how much you can afford to spend etc! I had a touring bike made by Scott which cost around £570.00 ish english pounds! Which I purchased within my budget!

If you're a serious cyclist then prices can go in my knowledge upto £4000.00 plus
If it's just used for commuting, then yeh you could settle for a used/second hand bicycle you can get them extremely cheap £50 upwards.. well depending on it's condition etc.

Check you're local Trekk, Scott or Carrera cycles shops, or buy a cycle magazine from a good newsagents such as WHSmith

I paid £5-00 as I bought off the man at the local council rubbish tip there are normally about 50 over there [but they are not supposed to sell them so a nods as good as a wink] and mine was barely used or try Ebay as there are bikes from about £10-00 I know as I often look at them amazed at the bargains.

my first MTB was an old Specialized Rock Hopper, and it was around 500 bucks
my first road bike was a KHS Flite 500 (steel), and cost me around 600 bucks
my first all carbon road bike is a Specialized Roubaix Pro, on clearance for 3000
my last carbon is my Cervelo Soloist, full Campy, 6000 bucks

I do have a basic commuter/comfort bike which I paid 400

My bike was 500 extras made it 700. sometimes you can get a good deal on bikes towards the end of the year when they are making room for the newer models. I got 75 cut off the price since it was a older bike.

i bought mine for $4100 USD, but i am an avid mountain biker. For a commuter/touring bike just get an old one, i like the old road bikes, they are cheap and easy to find and they can be generally low-mantinence.
