SIG Sauer P229. Best pistol made. HK is up there too.

You lean to the XD because it's got a lot going for it, there are a lot of good reasons to get it and it looks good too, doesn't it? Not a bad choice at all.

There are many excellent .40 cal S&W handguns I would sugest to buy the one that fits your hand the best. The XD is very nice so are the Glock 23 and 27, the HK USP, and the Sig P239. The most bang for the buck is the Ruger P 345, which is a .45acp and there will be ammo for this weapon at the last Walmart on the road to nowhere.

I have to agree with DJ, can't go wrong with Sig Sauer or H&K.
you pretty much get what you pay for. stay away from .40 kahrs, way to much power for a handgun that light, I have 9mm kahr and its a great CCW but not fun shoot felt recoil is actually more than any of my .40's or .45's. I wouldnt touch the .40 glocks either, they have a bad history, great in 9mm ,10mm and .45 acp and gap but not in .40. smith and wesson is good at wheel guns not semi autos, I've had 3 and all went back for repairs, my M&P was sent back for repair after 90 days and 4000 rounds, in compairson my sig p220 was sent back to have the springs replaced after 35000 rounds, my sig pro barely broke in after 10000 of .40 and .357, p226 is brand new so no history behind it yet.

on a budget the XD may be your best choice, its had very few problems and stolen a huge chunk of the consumer market from glock. the few problems I've seen involved the rolled guide rod getting bent in an assembled pistol (accidentaly dropped), easily solved buy purchaseing an after market solid guide rod.

I agree with the Spring field XD, The XD is well balanced, comfortable in the hand, and shoots very well with minimal recoil.......The only other 40.cal that I would recomend is the Taurus PT 24/7 pro.....It is just as good as good as the XD in my opinion.....They are both great quality pistols at a working mans price......If you get either of these you will be very happy with your pistol and have many years of shooting ahead of you.....Good luck.....

I own a Sig, HK, Beretta and Glock in 40sw, out of those I would rank them as follows. Best first,
HKUSP
Sig 229
Glock G22
Beretta 96G

I have fired the SW M&P and the springfield xd and a Steyr in 40sw, out of those I'd rather have the Steyr.

Springfield Armory, Beretta, or if you have the cash to dish out Kimber. Big fan of the first 2 and just can't afford the Kimber at this point.

I like the XD, and the backstrap pieces to fit it to the shooter's hand help. I also like the S&W Mod 99 made by Walther in the compact version. My 99 and my XD have neither one ever failed.

My preference is the full size Glock model 22. Cost is about $499 in my area.

Cannot go wrong with an XD. I would not go with S&W Autos. I have had bad luck with them myself. I have been with the XD since. I have a 9mm and .45.

Xd are nice guns. I own a 45acp XD and have had no problems out of it. Also, check Glock, Taurus, and Kahr.
