I've heard that definition of faith many times. But how is this kind of faith different from simply assuming?

Assume--to take for granted without proof; suppose; postulate; posit

Faith stands alone, its all you need; with a little faith the size of a mustard seed, you could move a mountain.
To assume some thing, you need a little faith to go along with it; its not strong enough to stand alone.

To Assume, you're not sure, but you take if for granted that it is true or there.
With faith, you know its true or there, you have no doubt about it. Faith is by the power of the mind.

Faith is simply trust.

When a man says to a woman that he loves her, the woman have two choices: to trust the man or distrust the man. If the woman believes the man's word or promise, then, the woman had "faith" in the man, for the woman believes that the man is trustworthy.

It is the same in Christianity, since by definition, that God is good, loving, faithful, and trustworthy, to believe Him is to become logical, reasonable and wise. If God is not trustworthy, then, to believe Him is to enter into destruction and insanity.

That is the reason why Christianity is far more better religion than any other group because of this system; FAITH SYSTEM. You don't have to enter into a religion with coercion and force. You have to use your mind, intellect, learning, and decision power.

And before one decides to lose his life to the God of the Bible, that person has the chance to study this God and decides. It is not entering a group, but it is entering into a relationship to God.

The evidence of God's promises may not be seen right now, but the evidences that God is faithful, true, correct, good, loving and powerful can be seen in our everyday life.

Obviously you don't understand the definition.
Biblical faith is based upon a direct communication of the Spirit of God to the human Spirit of the truthfulness and veracity of the Word of God, particularly as pertains to the message of Gospel. It is not without proof, either historically or experientially. The proof is the testimony of the Word. The Communicator of this truth is God speaking Spirit to spirit. Therefore it conveys an underlying reality to the inner man, because ultimate reality is not what is seen but the unchanging reality of the Creator God.

I have this faith.
It is more real than anything I can touch, smell, hear, see or feel.

Several respondents to your question have attacked faith and people of faith. The irony is that all of us--even atheists--have faith in something. The atheist has faith that the universe came into being without a Creator, and that there is no life after death. It does take faith to be a Christian, but it is not blind faith. There are several reasons why I believe the Bible is true. Contact me directly if you'd like me to explain them to you.

If I recall correctly, this statement is ascribed to Paul of Tarsus. The apostle hated rational knowledge, and several of his epistles directly target knowledgable people. So Paul tended to dress up faith as something noble with pretty language. But the truth is right there in his own words. Paul's influence goes a long way towards understanding why Christianity, and especially Catholicism, have not enjoyed facing rational knowledge.

The evidence is in your heart. You can assume something based on probability, i.e. the sun will rise tomorrow. However, it would be a matter of faith for you to believe in say your spouse or kid.

The key to this answer lies in the definition of the biblical understanding of the word,"Hope"(confident expectation)...faith is spiritually tangible...It is not a maybe or "hope so"....neither is faith,blind...it simply can not be seen.

A Christian is a person who believes God. And what that verse in Hebrews is saying is that a Christian can believe God and He always keeps what He says. Hebrews 11 tells of those who did just that. It also tells of the suffering they went through because they held onto God's word.

But that's what that is all about in the Bible, faith in God, makes you everything that God promised to those who trust Him.

That's the bottom line.

Faith is defined as belief without evidence or in spite of evidence to the contrary.
Or as Mark Twain said:
"Faith is believing what you know ain't so."

Faith... Let me explain. Faith is knowing without any doubt. Say you work and you get paid on Friday, you have no doubt that on payday you will get paid. That is how faith works... you dont see a paycheck but you know its there, waiting for you. Like God he is there waiting for you just have Faith. And you know you dont assume that your gonna get paid you know that you will.
