If you have a HDTV then yes there is a difference in visual quality but not as good as HD-DVD or Bluray. A good upconverting DVD player is around $100. I own a Sony upconverter hooked up to a 1080i HDTV and it looks great. Better than a regular DVD player.

Your HDTV uses similar technology to upconvet a SD DVD to its native resolution.
Unless you buy a really high-end upconverting DVD player, your HDTV most probably can do a better upconverting job than the Player. So, save your money for a true HD player.

They do work. The only thing is , your tv has to have an hdmi input on it. You have to use an hdmi cable to do the upconversion. True hd dose look better like hd dvd or bluray, and they will also upconvert your regular disc's as well, but the upconvert players will get you close to hd quality.

Standard DVDs will never look like HD. Don't waste your money in buying an upconverting DVD player, unless you need a new DVD player.
I think DVDs look phenomenal on an HD. If you think they don't look good on an HD, then you can buy a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive and get true HD.

If you need a DVD player, go for it. it does make some difference. In my experience, the quality of the image depends on the transfer. The standard DVD still looks good on HD TV if the movie studio took time and process the images in detail. Some of standard DVD picture quality is as good as Blu-ray. On otherhand, even for Blu-ray DVD, if the movie studio did bad job of digitalizing, it would looks like crap.
If you are looking for great quality, you are better off spending money on HD DVD player. You can not buy one for around $250. For money, and image quality you get for the money, this is pretty good deal.

decrease than some circumsatnces, sure, yet inclusive of your television in all likelihood no longer. First, you want a huge photograph to truly see any earnings, and 34" isn't super. 2nd, the HDTV will upscale a 480 sign to HD, so except the scaler interior the DVD participant is extra constructive than the single interior the television, you will no longer get any earnings. considering the fact that scalers in much less costly DVD gamers are actually not vulnerable to be precise end ... you get the photograph? rather, shop your funds.
