.270 is great for long range shots and is easier on the shoulder. I have a Remington 30-06 and a Winchester .270. I haven't hunted with the .270 yet but I can tell you that you won't have any problems taking big game with the 30-06. If you like less kick get the .270. But the 30-06 has reliable power and isn't really bad compared to my 300 Win. Mag. It's your choice and depends on what you hunt.

I own both but preference depends on what I am hunting. Both are great rounds but one must match the caliber to the game he is hunting. The .270 is a stellar deer round (as is the .30-06), but for deer hunting I just prefer the .25-06 Remington (another stellar deer round). If I am boar hunting I will lean toward nothing smaller than the .30-06. If I were to ever hunt say Mountain Goat I would favor the .270 (with the 24" inch barrel). If I were to ever hunt Elk or Moose then I would favor the .30-06. The only exceptions I can think of is if I were hunting where I could encounter say a Grizzly Bear while deer hunting, then I would definitely favor the .30-06 or even something larger as a matter of self-preservation.
Best.

I own a Remington Woodmaster Model 742 in the 30-06 caliber, which is a semi-auto rifle. It has very little recoil, considering its large caliber.
A 30-06 Bolt Action rifle, I'm told it has a lot more recoil than a semi-auto. I've never shot this caliber in a bolt action rifle. So take it for what its worth.
I have shot a .270 caliber bolt action rifle before .......The make and model escape my mind right now. But anyway, this caliber has less recoil than my Woodmaster 30-06.
I couldn't tell you what its like to shoot a .270 caliber semi-auto rifle. But giving its a smaller caliber than a 30-06.....I would assume it has even less recoil.
I've bought ammo for for the .270 that a friend of mine was going to let me shoot. But has not let me yet. Because I like how the gun shoots, I am strongly considering buying one for myself......Would be a nice addition to the guns I already have.
Both rifles that I've shot, are great guns. Both the .270 and the 30-06. For the longest time, I've wanted a 30-06 rifle. After shooting the .270 caliber, makes me want to go out and buy one of those too.

I have 2 Remington Model 700's. One is in .270 with a wood stock, and the other is composite in 30-06. If I had to give up one it would be the .270. It is a great rifle and caliber, but the 30-06 is the more versatile. If I could only have one caliber it would be 30-06.

Of the two calibers you list, I prefer the .30-'06 because there are so many more bullet designs and weights available compared to the .270.
But I'm not a .30-'06 Fan. I prefer the .358 Winchester, .30-30 WCF, and the .35-70 Gov't.

Which rifle do I prefer? For hunting? My Marlin 1895 GS, in .45-70 Gov't.
.270 or .30-06? I'd go with the .30. I'm a little prejudiced against calibers that start with a .2.
Just remember, a .270 or .30 may or may not expand, but a .45 will never shrink.

I'm going to buck the crowd and go with the .270 as my personal fav for the type of hunting I do. A great all around cartridge with a somewhat less recoil than the .06 but both are excellent choices you can't go wrong with either of them.
No facts to back up this statement, but it seems to me that the .270 shoots somewhat "flatter" than the .06. I do a lot of Kentucky windage shooting so I like to have to adjust as little as possible.
