I just started working at a new school in a new area my husband and I moved to. I've been teaching there since September and the environment is awful and the administration is abusive. It's starting to affect my life in all areas and making me unhappy. I'm scared to change jobs after just starting and doing the hunt all over again. I feel this school completely misrepresented the job... everyone there is miserable. Suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

there is no one else to talk to as it is a private school... so no union or any kind of representative. all the teachers are unhappy and their entire staff turned over from last year.

How sad that one of the most potentially fruitful environments world wide can become toxic as well. My heart goes out to you and the children.

If the administration is abusive, you must document the incidents. This will be your paper trail if you ever need one to support your observations.

Can you apply your positive outlook in your own classroom? If you can make that a happy place for you and your students go full steam ahead.

I have done the toxic environment sentence and I know I would have felt worse with children involved. If the teacher's have been unhappy for a long time, you won't be able to salvage the past. Try to shine as a positive person, and if there are any hopefuls, they will be attracted to you. Keep up the documentation, and when the opportunity arises (and it will) with the help of a lawyer you will be able to dust out the cobwebs and bring attention to the situation.

On a final note, if this job begins to make you ill, plan on stress time off. That will be the only way you will have time to recover from the trauma you have to go through now, day by day. Good luck. I appreciate good teachers very much!

You can be part of the problem, or part of the solution. If everything is as miserable as you say, isn't there anything you can do to brighten the picture? This may turn out to be an opportunity to shine. Are the children being affected by the bad conditions? I would think as a teacher you would be moved to try and change things.

I have worked for the sewer department, chemical plants, factories, forge plants and foundrys. Now that is what I thought you were talking about. That was a toxic environment.

Yours is more of an inconvience. If you are unhappy with the job then start looking, you won't be any younger next year, or any happier. Start the look now, and explain to the next prospective employer, the situation as to why you left.

good luck, teacher.

yea keep looking while you still have this job but keep a positive outlook on the job you have now. If it's that horrible I am sure other co-workers can relate to your feelings. This is where you can build connection with them and make your time at the school a little easier.

Well If you feel this way then you first need to report it, if you are part of the union then you really should. If its that bad then how could it be for the students! Someone needs to do something before it gets worse, and that someone is you! Take charge,Call the labor board also if need be.

Get someone to talk to the staff (some sort of representative for healthy work enviroments) and try to follow up on everyone and keep them on the right track. Also,, if you mean toxic enviroment literally, bring in some cleaners.

The only option is to get a new job unless you can fix it yourself...otherwise you are going to be unhappy.

Remember this....if you have a job you LOVE, you will never "work" another day in your life (no, not my quote but true....am I right?)
