I've got little experience in this area, except being anemic myself, several times in my life. I couldn't take the pills, because they backed me up badly. So, I ate Nutri-grain Eggos, breakfast cereal, grapes, raisins, meat, eggs.
It turned out eggs only 2% of the iron I needed.
Is he still on formula? There are some formulas with iron in them...but there's a constip problem there, too.
How about Carnation Instant Breakfast? He'll think he's getting chocolate milk, but lots of vitamins & iron instead. Or Pediasure.
I'm not an expert, just a TX Mom.

You need to see a doctor. If you don't like the advice you got, see a different doctor.
Giving him a lower dose is NOT A VALID SOLUTION.
Iron (part of what he is taking) is hard on the stomach and constipating. You need to talk to the doctor about this.
Anemia is serious. Way more serious than a bit of a tummy ache. You need to get real medical advice and follow it.

Give it to him with food, and check with his doctor about putting him on probiotics. These are a natural remedy to help balance his internal intestinal tract to help him digest the medicine. Butmake sure his doctor knows first so you are sure it does not interfere with his meds. One easy probiotic you could try without going to a health food store is acidopholus milk. I used to drink this everytime I had to take an antibiotic as a kid to help with stomach issues.

I mix all meds with milk in a bottle. But if he is giving your child too much, get a second opinion. Iron is not something you want to give your child an overdose of.

Have you tried giving it with food? I would ask your pharmacist for advice and to check to make sure the right dosage was given....Good Luck!!
