Ah, fruitcake. I couldn't stand it as a child, but as I've grown up, it's grown on me. I'm thrilled to get a good fruit cake, and it lasts less than a week.
For fruitcake-related literature: there's a Truman Capote story, "A Christmas Memory," I think, in which he tells about making fruit cakes for friends, distant relatives, and former presidents of the United States with an elderly aunt. The two hoard their money all year to pay for the ingredients, most importantly a big jug of moonshine, a cup of which is carefully poured onto each cake. I suspect the last was part of the appeal of the traditional fruitcake once upon a time.

Can't stand baked fruit cake myself....try this instead:
Ice Box Fruit Cake
1 pound pecan pieces
1 pound English walnut, pieces
1 pound Brazil nuts, pieces
1 pound box raisins
1 small can coconut
1 box graham cracker crumbs
1 can Eagle Brand sweet condensed milk
1 pound candied cherries, cut into little pieces
1/2 pound candied pineapple,
cut into little pieces
To a very large bowl, add milk first. Add 1/2 cup of water to milk can and pour into same bowl. Mix all the ingredients with water and milk mixture. Press into foil lined cake pan. Chill overnight.
Note: Has candy texture and can be place in cupcake or candy papers. Can be reformed. Relative always made this at Christmas. This is the only fruit cake that I like to eat. Going to try it like peanut butter balls or date nut rolls this year--spread cost out over multiple parties : )
Notice: no marshmallow cream or marshmallows.

I like most fruit cakes, but seldom get any. They taste good and last a long time. Homemade ones are best because they don't have all those chemicals you find in the store bought cakes.

Most people who do like fruit cake will not admit it because they will be the target for bad jokes!
