For a first time owner, I think the characteristics you would want to look for are: 1. A dog that is not overly dominant. In inexperienced hands, a dominant dog will frequently assume that it's the pack leader, and that's usually trouble. So I would think a fairly submissive dog would be a good starting point. 2. In terms of temperament, maybe one that is fairly placid and easy going - I would avoid very hyper, high-energy dogs, which tend to be pretty big barkers. I would want it to be fairly socialble, and interact pretty easily with other dogs and people. 3. Something that is relatively easy to train. There are a lot of great breeds that are not easy to train, and for someone who doesn't have some exerience in training, can be very frustrating. And I do believe every owner should do some obedience training with their dog. 4. I don't think size is a major factor. Threre are easy to deal with dogs of all sizes. It's more one of room and cost of feeding, etc.

You can set other criteria. If you're very athletic and want a dog to go running with you, then look for one that has higher exercise needs. Look at other aspects of your life, and envision the ideal dog. Then go find a book that describes the various breeds of dogs and try to put together a short list of possible breeds. Then try to find people who own them, or breeders perhaps, so you could see them firsthand. Or, you could go to your local animal shelter and describe what you're looking for. If they're worth their money, they could help you find a suitable match.

I can't, and won't say you should get such and such a dog, because what might suit my needs, might not suit yours. It may seem like a lot of work, but if you get the right dog, it will be worth it. If you get the wrong one, you may wish you had.

Good luck in your search.

Designer dogs are overpriced and poorly bred.
Teacups do not exist they are just another poorly breed dog that will have plenty of health problems.

Toy breeds do not need to go below the standard that akc has set for them. The are already tiny enough.

A first time dog owner should do plenty of research on the different breeds and find on that fits their lifestyle best.
Try looking at the shelter pound or a rescue.
Or find a reputable breeder who breeds to better the breed with each breeding they do and also one that checks for genetic conditions.

Where will the dog sleep? Does it have to be a puppy? Mixed breeds make excellent companions and often have fewer problems related to in-breeding which can be a real problem with pure-bred dogs. Why don't you volunteer at a shelter, or at least go visit one and see what is there. You may see one that really appeals to you. You may change your mind all together. Please don't patronize a pet store or puppy mill. There are a ton of dogs out there looking for a partner.

I'd go here if I could:

also, its a good rule of thumb never get more"dog" than you can handle. That St.Bernard, or Akita pup might look cute, but they aren't for you unless you want a dog the size of a small pony, and if you find a breed is too"hyper" for living in an apartment, it also wouldn't do. My next dog(when I am ready to get it) will probably be a small mix, I am getting too old to handle big dogs anymore.

I got my first puppy I've ever owned about three weeks ago and he is a beagle. He is great. Amazingly he's already pretty much housetrained and he can "sit" and "come here" already :D! Good luck on your choice. Beagles are GREAT! But make sure to not buy from a hunting stock breeder and buy from a show dog breeder. If you get a hunting dog he will never want to be near you and run away whenever he gets the chance.

You need to adopt a dog. Go to www.petfinder.com and find your perfect pet. Just type in your gender that you are looking for, ZIP breed, maybe a chiuauha, yorkie or a pomerainian, and the age you are looking for. You will find a lot of results. Adopt please. Dogs need to be adopted rather than bought. Dogs are dying, everyday, because no one adopts them. It is not fair, new bred dogs are being bought, while others die, is that fair?

haha. Jack Russell are NOT for first time puppy owners. If you want a lower maintenace dog, that has good health, get a muytt. Pomm, bichons, malteses and several other breeds are highly recommended for first time dog owners.
