My two favorites are a Rem 700 Mtn in 7x57 and a Win 71 (348). I've actually killed more deer with a Remm 700 BDL 6mm, but that's because I started shooting them with it back in the mid-60's. I'm a big fan of the 7mm08, and occasionally use 6.5x55, 8x57, 257 Bob, or even something inappropriately large just for the heck of it. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and I know in advance that if I'm using something with a trajectory like a mortar, the big guy's going to stand broadside at 300 yards in the open, and if I take one of the miniature flat shooters, he'll be in the middle of a canebrake. My experience in those matters has influenced my vocabulary somewhat but not my satisfaction with the rifles.

Marlin 1895GS, stainless steel lever action carbine, chambered in .45-70. It's tough, will resist all but the worst conditions, and leaves nothing to be desired in knockdown power. Also, it's pretty light and compact, so carrying it while stalking is easy. On top of that is a nameless 4x28mm scope that I'm not familiar with. I think it was off of a shotgun, since it's has a pretty long eye relief, which is nice to have with the recoil from the .45-70. It's on low rings, and shoots pretty level out to 150-200m.
Unfortunately, since I've moved, I cannot use it for deer anymore. I use my Mossberg 500 with the rifled barrel and Lightfield EXP sabot slugs. It's sighted with a Nikon 3x-9x scope with a goofy BDC. It's pretty good, not quite as nice as the Marlin, but the parkerized finish on everything is kinda tough. Not as much as the Marlin. Still a good slug gun, and doesn't pinch your fingers like the 870. But not quite as nice as the Marlin for deer hunting work.

My favorite deer rifle is still my old tried-n-true Remington 700 ADL in .25-06 Remington caliber. I bought this one new in 1974 for less than $120. It has the 24" barrel and is the most accurate out-of-the-box rifle I have.
Happy hunting.

VZ-24 Cheq. Mauser rechambered for the 8mm/06 Wildcat round. Loaded with Sierra 220Gr. Spitzer Boatails to around 2400 FPS, Every deer I've touched with this rifle has not traveled more than 25 yards before collapsing.

I use the 30-.06. I like it. It is a very common gun and it can take any North American animal.
It has a good range of bullet weight. You can buy bullets that have 150 grain which have fairly good ballistics or you can buy bullets that are 180 grain which have worse ballistics (the bullet drops quicker), but are more powerful.
There are also a lot of bullets made for the 30-.06 so they are cheaper than other bullets.
One of the best deer and elk rifle is the 300 Winchester Short Mag. It has a lot of power, great ballistics and it doesn't recoil as bad as the 300 ultra mags. But it is more expensive and is overkill for smaller game.

Marlin 1894 in .357 Magnum. 100% happy.
CVA .50 inline muzzleloader. 100% happy.
I had a Ruger Mini-14. I had no issues with .223 but hated the mini and never used it to hunt deer.

Depends on where I'm hunting. I have a Savage .30-06 and for Badlands hunting a Winchester .30-30.
Pleased with both
