Pathogens are disease-causing organisms. They include a wide variety of organisms, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc.

So, to answer your question, if an infection is cured by antibiotics, and the only choices for the causative agent are virus or pathogen, I would have to say that the infection was caused by a SPECIFIC TYPE OF PATHOGEN (bacteria).

It could not be cause by a virus, because antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.

Antibiotics do not have any effect on viruses, so the answer has to be a pathogen. Only antivirals will kill a virus.

Antibiotics are only effective against bacterial infections, they won't do a thing to a viral infection.
