No. This is a flat out lie, spread by anti-environmentalists.

California has a law requiring homeowners to clear brush 100 feet away from their home. The law was _sponsored_ by the Sierra club.

"The Sierra Club has long supported responsible fuel reduction around communities and fully supports any wildfire policy that makes community protection its top priority."

Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope

The problem is that homeowners don't obey the law, and the State doesn't enforce it.

Homeowners around San Diego also voted down a bill to provide additional fire fighting equipment.

It's not popular to say, but some homeowners are responsible for bringing this on themselves. Environmentalists had nothing to do with it.

Some communities around San Diego had united to clear brush around every home. They were much less affected.

Ben O - Read the last paragraph. It's the truth. The law wasn't passed because someone thought it was a clever idea. There was proof it works. It's not absolute protection, but it's good protection.

I've head similar things before.

Envronmentalists have been known to object to forestry mangement which is a euphamisim for logging. Whenever there is a major fire, the logging lobby uses it as an opportunity to score some points.

Bob, can't people can only clear scrub on thier own land and 100 yards from houses might save a few houses, but it won't stop a forrest fire.

yes, it is part of the environmentalists fault. They wont let people clear the forest or do anything to help for fire prevention. I remember reading a story a few years back about how these firefighters couldnt get air protection in time because of all the red tape to dip into a stream because they might scoop up some stupid fish.

It's well known that environmental groups like ELF (Earth Liberation Front) are known for setting fires to destroy expensive homes.

I would be surprised to find out that this group did start the fires as a way to protest the environment.

It would be interesting to find out if anyone of those caught are enviro terrorists and wanted this in the name of more fear mongering for the end of humanity due to global warming.

What about its the fault of developpers who build some houses in risky areas (forests, slopes) and also homeowners who actually buy them?
