Worst? Probably Ambrose Burnsides. At Frederricksburg, he ordered a direct frontal assault on an entrenched enemy position over and over. Not good or smart.

Best? Almost assuredly Stonewall Jackson. His Valley campaign was great and his attack at Chancellorsville was brilliant. If he had lived, the south would have won the Civil War. He was only 39 when he died, yet his troops called him "old Stonewall."

Lee was the best and worst. He create precedents on how to use a military force. His maneuvering and capability to coordinate attacks were unheard of for that time. You have to ember the south was winning until Gettysburg.

Now h he is the worst because he lost the most important battle, Gettysburg. There were many times he had the chance to win on the first and second day but did not capitalize on it, due to bad Intel.

The best commander at Gettysburg was COL Chamberand defending the flank.

Ambrose Burnside is probably the worst general, especially after his defeat at Fredricksburg.

Opinions differ on the best. I think that Winfield Scott was the smartest, but he was too old by then. Sherman and Grant understood modern warfare better than anybody.

Burnside was terrible, as was Pope, but for sheer uselessness nobody can compete with Union General Benjamin Butler.

Both Meade and McClellan come to mind as the worst (among many) but I'd have to lean toward McClellan.

Jackson, Longstreet, Sheridan, and Sherman come to mind as "best" (among many) but I'd still have to tip my hat to Lee.
