My gf has major asthma attack and her mom wants me to pratice rescue breathing on my gf as she watches. I have seen her sister do it on her for about five minutes but then she had to stop as my gf needed to use her nebulizer and do a breathing treatment. Is it ok for me to do it on her??? Can i do it for five minutes??? has anyone else ever done rescue breathing on anyone??? Is her mom odd for asking me to do this???

Her mom just wants to make sure she can count on YOU if the need arises. YOU can do this. You might not ever have to. (I pray you don't). IF you ever have to, just try to relax yourself as much as possible and do what you know.

I think you would be better off taking a certified CPR class. Trained personnel will teach you the proper technique. I am a licensed child care provider and keep my CPR and First Aid certification current at all times. Practicing rescue breathing on a living person is not generally recommended. Rescue breathing is usually practiced on a specially designed mannequin reserving use on a living human for true emergencies only. I wouldn't do it, but I would take a class to learn how to do it properly. Local Red Cross chapters as well as hospitals will offer classes for lay responders (anyone who isn't doing it for a living). My good friend died of a severe asthma attack so I am certain her mother has asked you to do this as it scares her to think that her daughter may be out with you, have an attack, and you won't know what to do.

You should take a CPR class.. it's roughly $35 depending on where you live and you'll be ... (liscensed?) to perform CPR for two years before you have to take the class again. It's a one day class and it's very informative.. and not to mention wouldn't it be great if the need rose (not just for your gf but anyone) and you were able to help?! I highly recommend the class.
